CMU Priority Waitlist

I have heard now that they wait listed some binding early decision candidates so those kids have a leg up because they for sure want CMU first, they applied BINDING early decision! We feel its hopeless as a RD wait list, and put money on Georgia Tech.

@Coloradomama Is it convenient to mention the source?

should we be expecting an email from CMU with a waitlist reply form or general info regarding what they want and don’t want as far as a follow up? (recs, updates in general etc)

@terr24lr According to their waitlist FAQ, there will be a prompt or some kind of statement we can fill out on CMU’s website in late April so that we can communicate our continued interest.

@ALeynng they might; I doubt they would honestly want to add more to the application process… more for them to evaluate.

@ALeynng PWL may be an indicator of interest as well

@mutiyo Personal friend of my son mentioned he was wait listed recently, and we know he applied to CS only binding early. Originally thought he was rejected. He was at APEA with my son last summer. In some ways it was helpful to see that he was not rejected after all, so the summer school may have helped students get wait listed (and get into Georgia Tech as OOS applicant this year, both my son and this other student were able to do that ).

I think I am too negative and perhaps its worth it to get onto the CMU priority wait list if you can afford the school. Our aid package was good, (two kids in college next year) but would likely go back to full price for year 2, 3 and 4 so its just beyond our means, is one reason the wait list is not a sensible option for my son.

It was very nice of CMU to calculate aid packages for wait listed candidates and it made our decision to not get on it easier. CMU is a great school and maybe worth getting onto a wait list, if the student has psychological fortitude for a reject later and can put money down on a second choice, and lose that money. (Housing deposits are often refundable, so look into that, regular deposits, usually will lose that $$)

Some students will get in off this priority wait list, of course! Good luck!

Are priority wait list candidates expected to submit an update? I haven’t received any additional information since submitting my decision to be on the list. Will they expect more recommendations?

@CollegeQ7 I called the admissions office the other day and the woman I spoke to said wait for an email from cmu and it will have specific questions for you. My advise, don’t send anything extra than what they ask for. Even though May 4th is literally right around the corner, fight the urge to send a desperate email and wait for what they want from us

I just received an email from cmu telling me they have filled up their class for most programs. Time to move on I guess

@ALeynng do you think there is still a chance for priority waitlist? or do you think cmu was referring to waitlist in general

@terr24lr Did you get the email? It said all the listed programs were fully enrolled. Doesn’t matter which wait list, is what I’m assuming.

CIT not mentioned on the list. Still hope?

Can any of you post the list here?

@anon123567 @Flurite I am curious about the list too. No email here.

@mutiyo @MandomeLife
What specific college did you guys apply to?
Were you priority wait list or regular?
Is it possible the email was only sent to those who basically aren’t coming off the wait list?

Email:

Thank you for your continued interest in Carnegie Mellon. As we near May 1, we have found that we are very close to reaching our enrollment goals in several of our colleges/programs. We wanted to make you aware of this as soon as possible so that you can move forward with your current college plans.

Due to the number of students already enrolled in the programs below, we will not be going to the waiting list in:
Information Systems
Mellon College of Science
School of Architecture
School of Art
School of Design
Tepper School of Business
We still plan to officially reveal admission decisions on Where Am I in the Process on Wednesday, May 4.

If you’re on the waiting list for a program that was not mentioned in this email, there’s still a possibility that we may have the opportunity to admit students from the waiting list in that program. Please wait for further communication from us in the next few days.

I applied for priority waitlist at the CIT only, and I was not sent this email. Anxiously waiting 4 days but AP Chem is on Monday so I’ll be well distracted until then.

@terr24lr I think cmu was referring to the general waitlist. There is still a chance, but it depends on departments/programs. Which department’s waitlist are you on?

@ALeynng Tepper school of business and I am under the priority waitlist. I reached out to CMU like two weeks back and they said that after May 1st they will email us to ask some short essay questions (essentially a letter of interest questionnaire type). Did you send a letter of interest on your own yet? I haven’t and I’m really hoping that waiting until after May 1st for that email isn’t going to come around and bite me in the butt

@terr24lr Nah I am assuming the same thing so I didn’t send in any update or letter of continued interest
