CMU Priority Waitlist

Same situation here. priority waitlisted for cit only since MCS waitlist is closed.

@terr24lr I’m not on the waitlist. I was just curious as to what majors were full.

To those on the waitlist though: what university have you committed to temporarily?

@Brevity I hope this is not a silly question but I tried looking up CIT and I am a little confused. Is that a specific program within a school or is it its own school?

@terr24lr CIT is Carnegie Institute of Technology. It is college of engineering of CMU

@Brevity Is it possible that you didn’t get the email because college of engineering was not listed under those that were not going to be revised for waitlisters?

Hi,
I’m on the Dietrich College Priority Waitlist, and I haven’t received any emails yet. I did call a few times and asked about when I could expect the details on the letter of continued interest, and they claimed the latest they would send it is May 1. I have a looming feeling that Carnegie might have filled up the colleges that weren’t mentioned in the email too, and only discovered this today, hence no email so far today :/.

To the guy asking above, I committed to Boston University Kilachand Honors college.

This year seems like a repeat of last year in which only 4 kids got taken off the waitlist. How could CMU do nothing to refrain from over-enrollment knowing that it happened just a year ago?

@Shpun1 , It’s Sunday and their admissions office is not even open at the moment; I’d put it at tomorrow at the earliest that we receive some sort of discouraging or encouraging email.

@terr24lr , Possibly, we’ll never know, but it seems I was one of the only people commenting here that was only offered waitlist at CIT and thus we probably can’t draw conclusions from this.

@ALeynng Here’s a copypasta of a comment taken off of the CMU subreddit from a guy who got in:

"The admissions director for the university spoke to the audience during an Admitted Student Day that I went to. He mentioned that last year, they over-enrolled by over 130 students (which lead to the extremely small yield of waitlist admits that you mententioned). This year, they tried to prevent that; “If you’re sitting in this room, you did NOT get in for your academics.” The admissions committee had to change up their process and looked at everything but academic stats – test scores and GPAs were just a barrier that applicants had to cross, and did not necessarily contribute to an acceptance. The emphasis was put on the talent. If you were passionate about your field, and were able to display that passion in your application, then you got accepted. Which led to the far lower acceptance rate that you posted.

That being said, I believe that CMU is still looking for a class size roughly similar to those of year’s past, though they’re expecting far less (accepted) people to enroll rather than more. That would lead to a far larger accepted-off-the-waitlist pool than usual. I’m expecting the number to be around the 80s-90s instead of the 50s"

@Brevity is that copypasta (lol i can’t stop laughing that haha) from a recent admitted students day? Like was that info mentioned at an orientation a couple months back? Regardless, I find that surprising that CMU accepted less students than usual because I thought the class size for 2020 was pretty large. I interpret that info mixed because on one side, they have their boat filled with enrolled students, why would they want more? Which connects to the email they sent mentioning schools they will not go through the waitlist for. The other argument is what you said- that they may go through the waitlist and grab more kids than usual to fill the spots that they didn’t want to overflow. This is all speculation on my part…i definitely pray that it is the latter rather than the former!

@terr24lr CMU typically enrolls 1500-1550 students every year as freshmen, so it all depends how many are actually enrolling versus how many were accepted. Enrollment size has been on a positive trend, however.

@terr24lr
Hi. I actually posted that on Reddit as /u/MandomeLife. That is referring to my Admitted Student Day visit about a week and a half ago. What the admissions director said might’ve been little bit exaggerated, but my family and I saw stats in the admissions office that backed up what he said.

Also, the admissions director said something along the lines of “the difference between an acceptance and a waitlist just boiled down to how much extraneous artistic or academic talent you had, and how much that talent pertained to your passion.” Again, GPA and test scores didn’t matter.

@MandomeLife That’s pretty interesting actually. Do you by any chance have an idea on whether the email people have been getting relates to the priority wait list as well or just the wait list?

Hello, I am a parent of a PWL student for IS. We did get the email about waitlist being closed for some schools. Does anyone have experience if waitlist can be used for the larger college the specific program is housed in. For example, IS is housed within Dietrich, so can one be considered for waitlist for the overall DC college. Similarly, one may have Biology within MCS, but are you considered for MCS itself if Bio is closed. We also waited for more information before sending interest to CMU and not sure if the email went to those that did not send them interest

@Flurite No clue. If I had to guess, that email pertained to both waitlists. The departments listed on the email are small enough already that it wouldn’t be wrong to think that they’re completely full. My school, the School of Design, is packed to the brim this coming year. I’d assume those other schools are packed as well.

Well its a wrap folks! I just got an email with the following message:

"Thank you for your continued interest in Carnegie Mellon. Now that May 1 has passed, we’re finding that we’re very close to reaching our enrollment goals in several of our colleges/programs. We wanted to make you aware of this as soon as possible so that you can move forward with your current college plans.

Due to the number of students already enrolled in the programs below, we will not be going to the waiting list in:
College of Engineering
Dietrich College
We still plan to officially reveal admission decisions on Where Am I in the Process on Wednesday, May 4.

If you’re on the waiting list for a program that was not mentioned in this email, there’s still a possibility that we may have the opportunity to admit students from the waiting list in that program. Please wait for further communication from us in the next few days.

We wish you the best in your future endeavors and again, thank you for your strong interest in Carnegie Mellon.

Sincerely,
The Office of Admission"

It looks like they may accept 0 of the waitlist again :frowning:

Just FYI, people waiting on CIT or Dietrich may have received the similar email today.

“…

…”

The hope is dimming!

It seems like scs is the only department that is not filled up

I’m so done with cmu…for such a prestigious school they couldn’t even figure out how not to over-enroll/maintain a 50 people per year off the waitlist average. What is the point of having a waitlist system if you’re just going to give people false hope? This used to be my #1 school but after this fiasco I’ve lost my interest. All these colleges hold so much power over us it’s ridiculous.
For others who signed up for a spot on the waitlist- cmu probably just isn’t the right school for you and it’s not your only option either. focus on the school you paid your deposit to and what you can do to reach your full potential there! if you really love it maybe go there for grad school?

@MandomeLife So just out of curiosity, what is your prediction for this year’s waitlist yield. Do you think they’ll take no, medium, or a large amount of students off the waitlist? Btw are you committed to CMU (if so what school)?
