I kinda wanted to create a thread that all semifinalists can keep up to date with each other and find out when one or another finds out about finalist status! I cannot wait to find out about this! February can't come soon enough!!!!

Does anyone know....do they just pick 250 out of the nation or do they give it to a certain number of people per "region" and what are those regions?

250 from the nation...best applicants with some regard to geography as far as I know, but mostly just a "first past the post" policy in regards to how well you score on the rubric. DO NOT QUOTE ME! This is simply info from my counselor...ICFireball who posts on the other coke forum should be able to answer this more in depth...GOOD LUCK TO ALL

lol ok yea I wasn't sure how they exactly picked them since they said about some people being regional scholars and some national scholars. I invited some of the other members from the other coca cola post but I definitely couldn't get them all. If you are able to invite some more feel free!! and yes good luck to you too!!!!

i know that it says we will find out mid-february, but anyone have any idea if maybe we will find out earlier.... we did find out early in the last round, maybe they are working extra quick this year! :)

lol oh I could only hope we find out early or I might drive myself insane!! lol I read somewhere that they are doing judging January 29th-February 2nd so I would think that any time after that we might find out! :)

I hope we find out soon! Good luck all!

So I was wondering how exactly they look these over and how many people look over each application.....I am kinda worried that some qualified applications don't recieve the attention they deserve just because people are tired of looking over them!!

please go to the other coke post and read through thoroughly!!! icfireball posts all this info about this process...DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Good luck to all!

lol oh don't worry I read over all of that carefully lol but I don't think it ever mentioned if the applications are read over by more than one person or not or if just the one person scores your application based on the link ICFireBall posted

Hey dairy,

You can see the rubric I posted in the other Coca Cola forum below:

Coca-cola selects college counselors and other educators to participate in the judging. I do not know how many people read each applicant, but I do know that they care... they're not like AP or SAT writing graders who are rushing through to get things greater. I don't know this for a fact, but I'm pretty sure Coca Colas readers do not get paid apart from travel costs.

I would say that at the semi-finalist level, your application will get read thoroughly. At the preliminary level, the same was not true.

Also, about whether Coca Cola selects based on geography:

I believe national finalists are selected from the best of the group nationally, however, I noticed in Coca Cola's search engine of applicants, "Regional" and "National" are categories of Finalist. The semi-finalist search does not have any categories like this:

Oh yea that is very good to know that the people reading them actually care about what they are doing and realize the huge impact of their decisions and yea in the other forum I read some pretty angry posts by people who felt they were qualified but did not get selected as semifinalists but it would be near impossible to look over 75,000 applications that thoroughly!! lol I definitely am interested in their selection process and I thank you so much for your informative posts!!! Your guidance counselor must be a very good individual to help you with information! lol

When I asked them on the phone they told me that two people read each application. I am really excited about this... I really hope I can win.. I spent many many hours on my application. Good luck to everyone!

Oh awesome! That is good that two people judge them instead of just one who could possibly be biased against something. I am super excited for this too! It is such a prestigious scholarship that if any of us get it, it's really a great honor!

This might be a kind of strange request lol but does anyone have the email that they originally received from the coca cola scholars foundation saying they were a semi finalist? You can delete any personal information with it but I sure would appreciate it!!! I wanted to print it off so I could put it in my scrapbook! lol Like I said I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!

Here's the email I got...

Congratulations ataraxis!

You have been selected as a Semifinalist in the 2008-09 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. Because so few of the total number of applicants (nearly 75,000) for the Coca-Cola Scholars Program are advanced as Semifinalists, we consider this an outstanding achievement. As one of 2,100 Semifinalists, we hope that you see your selection as affirmation of your ability to distinguish yourself academically and personally.

Next Steps: and then they outline dates, deadlines, etc...

Notification informing you of the reading committee's decision will be mailed by mid-February, 2009. Those selected as Coca-Cola Scholars must attend the Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend (April 2-5, 2009) at the Scholars Foundation's expense during which time you will interview for one of 50 National Scholar awards of $20,000. The remaining 200 Scholars will receive Regional Scholar awards valued at $10,000.

On behalf of your local Coca-Cola Bottler, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and the entire Coca-Cola system, I salute you for your hard work and dedication.

Sincerely,
Mark
