What kind of leadership positions did you have? On the national and global level?

^^ satacer don’t worry about it - Siemens SF + 14 APs is much more legitimate.

Well… you forgot to mention that you are homeschooled. Thus the 1,200 is suddenly less impressive. But you are absolutely right - the Semifinalist pool is competitive. The great majority of the Finalists last year had 2200+ SAT/34+ ACT and went to HYPS.

The service aspect should shake out with essays.

In our town, a kid we know had a lengthy newspaper article about his extensive community service, mostly volunteering at our local hospital. I was impressed until I learned that he was on work-release from school half-days for two years doing this volunteer job. His dedication is admirable, but counting schoolwork as community service gets cloudy.

Ethically, D and I agree that she cannot count weeklong overnight camp volunteering beyond the actual hands-on time with kids. Some, we’ve heard, count the hours they’re eating, sleeping, and in between duties.

I believe it all works out in the end, though. Sometimes things go differently than expected, but generally, the cream rises to the top.

That’s really not classy pulling the “you’re homeschooled” card on me. I have had JUST as rigorous a schooling as anyone else, putting in just as many, if not more hours than the average CC student. I have many APs to show for that. I also play competitive sports. I just make time and am efficient. I do what i love, and while doing what i love, make a point to help others.

I’m just calling you out on the “Just to let everyone know how competitive it is, i’ll just mention my CS hours.” It sounds like the reason the Coca-Cola scholarship competitive is because you’re in it haha. Best of luck to you for the Finalist stage. I probably won’t go for it because it is so competitive.

I was more meaning to help people see how competitive it is. Hours alone don’t get you in, but they certainly help. I’m still amazed I got in. It’s like a harvard student saying "yeah, I had to do ___ in order to get in. " Nothing wrong with that.

Satacer, I think the only reason they could possibly reject you is due to the SAT reasoning score.
Everyone I know who got semi-finalist had scores high than a 2250
Man… that does seem really unfair.

^^ Wait I don’t recall having to give our SAT/ACT scores…

I don’t think you did? I only have a 31 anyway, i don’t think they’ll reject you because of it. Again, the correlation and causation argument comes into play.

Sorry to interrupt the “mine’s bigger than yours” debate but I know from experience that this isn’t only a numbers game. Yes, many of last year’s finalists were HYPSM candidates - but not all, or even most. A 2250 SAT was certainly not a cut-off. Yes, many of last year’s finalists had lots of EC hours - but the sense my D got at finals weekend was that most exhibited true and meaningful leadership and/or creativity in their ECs - and it seemed like true community service was of value.

What do Coca Cola reviewers look for? You can’t know for sure. But you’ve already made the 3% cut. Anyone who feels that they can’t make the next 10% because they can’t demonstrate 2,000 hours/year of EC is probably focused on the wrong metric.

Good luck.

Hi There, Is anyone out there able to open and download the documents? When I click on them it asks for my SS#. Where do I input that?

^ Same, that’s my problem.

^same here. I also can’t click on “submit” after filling out the Emory survey.

Open it through the link that they sent you in your email, that one works unlike the website.

I think it’s a ranking…because your last name is between H-J, and my last name begins with L, and my number is higher than yours…

I’m having the same problem…

They didn’t even send me a notification through email…just through mail. Weird.

List of semifinalist:

Woah, only person who is home schooled and only person from Knoxville in TN. Weird.

Many times, our emails get caught in SPAM & junk folders (or are auto-deleted as trash). If you are a SF, give us a call 800-306-2653 and any of us can re-send the email. Also, the email has all the documents included to continue the application process.

Sorry for any confusion.
