Cockrell Engineering Honors Acceptance Letters

@comptechmom,

We got admission packet only yesterday. It was dated way back 23rd Feb. That is why I asked. Thanks for clarifying it.

@midclassdad We got to admissions packet snail mail the day after he was admitted to Cockrell, which was two weeks ago or so? He got the snail mail honors letter yesterday. (We just live three hours from UT.) But his Mystatus did not indicate anything. The snail mail letter had a url that when typed in, led him to the honors page. But there was no link to it in his Mystatus. He had to type it in from his letter.

I hope this helps. And good look to your student.

@Texasmomof3,

His admission status was updated on 22nd of Feb itself. but we got that physical letter yesterday. That tells the lapse of time between Austin and NY.

I can extrapolate the same thing for honors, if he gets one. Is the link you told is a custom link for student or is generic link? True my status page honors is just telling that application is being reviewed.

@midclassdad‌

I think it was a personal link, because it took him to a page to accept his offer, etc. When he first logged in, it said his honors app was still under review, even though we knew from the letter we got in the mail last night that he had been admitted. I have no idea if all Cockrell honors decisions have even made made yet, but if so, you probably still have a week to wait for your letter before I’d even get a bit anxious. (I know, easier said than done.)

@Texasmomof3,

More than being anxious about Honors, being Out of State, we are anxious about any possible scolarships that can come with that. Thanks for all your replies. Now it is clear how it works.

Daughter, in state, got engineering honors letter y’day along with regular admission letter! My status not yet updated…
top 2%, ACT 35, 4 year band, multiple leadership positions and multiple science fair awards etc.,

@midclassdad my understanding is that most if not all EHP students some scholarship money or other with the minimum being a $1000 award…The good thing for you is even a $1,000 scholarship gets your child in-state tuition…

@karjanr,

Minimum $1000 award need not mean in-state tuition. This is what i understood. It only makes one eligible for applying for out-of-state tuition waiver. But it do not guarantee it.

Once again, out-of-state tuition waivers are very limited and hard to get. Read about it here:

http://www.engr.utexas.edu/undergraduate/scholarships/outofstate

Also, consider yourself (or your future Longhorn) lucky if you get any scholarship from UT.

@FloMoMom,

I am not very optimistic seeing the kind of scores here. If they consider M + W as they considered for admission, then my son stands a chance for Honors. His M + W stat is 1540. Let us see.

Got my letter in the mail. Also offered a 4 year scholarship. Unfortunately, no OOS tuition waiver. On the Website @FloMoMom‌ linked to, it states

"If you were not offered a tuition waiver in your scholarship award letter from the Cockrell School, then we will NOT be able to offer you a waiver now or later. "

Also, forgive my lack of crediting (I forgot who said this), but I think someone from years past said they called and the school of engineering said they only had 7 to 8 tuition waivers to give out each year. So obviously, it was an incredibly select group of students who received the offer.

@ClassicalCollege,

There you go. Can you share your stats? As you are also out-of-state, I just got curious.

@ClassicalCollege,

I also heard about that 7-8 number from somebody. May be MaineLonghorn. Not sure.

So what does the engineering honors program require a student to do. I just got accepted and I’m debating whether it’s a good idea to do it.

@ClassicalCollege,

Also, I was misled by below article.

https://juliasnoel.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/2013/10/17/gaining-in-state-tuition-for-out-of-state-students/

It made it sound as if out of state waiver is something you can get unexpectedly. May be cockrell is stringent. Also, it says that recipient got it much later through unexpected email.

Thanks @kiriii‌ for your belief in me! Also, congrats on your EHP acceptance! All of these stats are making me so nervous, lol. Mail seems to take a while to come from Texas to California, and my stats are low/borderline for EHP. More towards the low side. Now it’s just a waiting game… It seems like we’re in the same boat @midclassdad‌. I hope I can get scholarships; OOS is expensive.

@Texasmomof3‌ @comptechmom‌ Congrats on your kids getting in! They have great stats :slight_smile:

@FutureOilBaron‌ I had absolutely no doubt about you getting into EHP, lol. Congrats, man!

@midclassdad‌

I can understand why. The wording does make it seem like that.

My stats are
ACT - 35 - all subsections 35
SAT - 2220 (800 M)
SAT II - 800 M2, 800 physics, 770 Lit.
Rank - 1/63 - pretty non-competitive school.
some APs, decent ECs, awful essays, and 1 LOR.

I have a few chance me threads if you want more details.

@ClassicalCollege,

After seeing your stats and others, my expectation went from 10% to 0% for my son on Engineering Honors and Out of State Waiver. In a way it is a relief.

Which branch of engineering you got admitted to? My son got admitted to Chemical Engg.

@midclassdad‌

I was admitted into the electrical engineering program. Congrats to your son - UT austin has a fantastic Chem. engineering program.

@FutureOilBaron Not much, in reality. You get money, access to all the normal honors perks, and you /can/ do an honors thesis. I’m pretty sure the thesis isn’t even a requirement - you just have an oppurtunity to do it. At least, that’s my impression from the site. It’s basically just a bunch of benefits provided you keep up a decent GPA.

@imthereal I’d check your MyStatus now; my status for honors finally updated on there, it might have for you too.
