Does anyone know the average scholarship amount associated with the honors engineering acceptance? Mine was $10,000 a year, up to $40,000. Is this average? above average?
@friendluck
Mine was the same amount. I do not know if this this is average, but I was looking through last year’s thread and I saw amounts including $1,000, $5,000, and $12,000, so it appears that $10,000 is on the high end.
So I hear that they updated the MyStatus for people who got in.
As someone from Texas who hasn’t received anything in the mail/or has had their mystatus updated yet and was fairly certain they were going to get in…
does anyone who know they got accepted have a mystatus that is not updated?
@friendluckey IMO that’s a LOT of money per year for UT. If you don’t mind posting, what were your stats?
@kiriii I just checked, still in review rip. I don’t think I got in, but I wasn’t really expecting it because my stats weren’t great enough imo. Maybe I’ll try to apply after a semester/year/whatever the requirement was! I think the honors perks sound great. Congrats, again!
@FutureOilBaron here are my stats

@friendluckey Bravo! Those are some really good stats! Congrats on the scholarship!
Congrats to everybody who got Engineering Honors with a well deserved stats. In a different note, do any of you know about number of Engineering Honors that Cockrell issues every year? It may be not be a fixed number, but there should be some ball park number. If any of you know, please share the same.
I can’t find any numbers @midclassdad but it’s pretty small. I think less than 200 students are invited to join Engineering Honors each year. They shared the statistic at an Engineering Session in late March the year my son was admitted to UT.
Thanks for the info. That ball park is sufficient.
Also, the stats I see in this thread for Engineering Honors makes me wonder what kind of stats 40 Acres scholars will have?
Well, for the class of 2018, 48 out of 52 of the 40 Acres Scholar Finalists were from Texas. The median SAT score was 1470 which is really good, but not incredible, especially for the type of scholarship - though keep in mind these are finalists, not the actually scholars. I imagine it will largely be comprised of in-state recipients which means that the stats won’t be as high as one might expect.
Oh. That means they prefer in-state for that scholarship. 1470 is what? SAT M + CR? Then it is not that great score even for being finalists. These folks I guess will not compete for other scholarships or Engineering Scholars. Anyways, if the scholarships are meant mainly for in-state, stats may not be stellar. I agree with you there.
Also, I saw in one article that UT at Austin want to improve their brand in New York. So they are going to give atleast one spot in 40 Acres for candidate from NY.

Interesting. We are from NY. If they send an out of state waiver our way, we will be more than happy
But more in-state students with stellar stats reported their score in this thread for Engneering honors. Why they are not considered for 40 Acres or were they considered for that also?
The 40 Acres Scholarship is intended to recruit exceptional students who might otherwise choose a different school. I think stats are just a small portion of what makes a student exceptional.
May be. But I think stats will be considerable portion, but not all. When I say stats, I did not mean just SAT numbers. I mean the leadership positions they took, how they stretched their limits academically etc. All those were also good for some of the students reported here. That is why I thought they should be considered for 40 Acres too.
@midclassdad @FloMoMom
From my understanding of what I’m hearing from those who received 40 Acres in the past and Finalists this year - The essay was the key. It’s interesting and shocking what you hear. I think the better stats would be a followup to see what those 40 Acre recipients are doing now.
For those who didn’t receive an honors acceptance letter, does your honors tab still say currently in review?
Yes. That is how it is in my son’s case.
