college admissions emails

hi, so i'm in high school and i'm totally new to this whole college stuff
I've taken the PSAT and the SAT and provided all information.
I've been getting a bunch of these emails from different colleges ever since.
Do these emails mean anything?
They specifically refer to me and ask me to take equizzes
and stuff..
What do these have to do with my college choice?

The emails are form letters, sent out to basically everyone who they might want to attend. Look at them to see what colleges you might be interested in, but don’t assume they mean anything.

On the PSAT, there is a little box asking if you want to be part of the “Student Search Service” which in the end is basically a mailing list…fit to the prospective career you might go in (think back…they asked what you might be interested in). For me, I can’t take any of the e-mail seriously and just send it to the SPAM folder. But hey, something might catch your interest.

The emails are from schools that purchase test scores like the PSAT and SAT and send out mailings/emails/etc based on that information. You’re apparently in their target marketing group (which is not always directly in line with their targeted admission group, but that’s another story), and often the first mailing or email will be a feeler to gauge interest. If you respond, they’ll likely communicate with you regularly. If you don’t, some you’ll never hear from again, and others may have more aggressive marketing campaigns and continue to contact you. E-mail is an extremely cheap way for schools to reach out to you, so expect a lot of emails from schools if you are using search services or reporting your test scores to search services.
