College Essay Topic

I'm trying to pick a topic for my college essay and so far I have come up with these topics. I would love if you could give me feedback on them!!

My name - I have the same name as my father (he's Sr. and I'm Jr.) and I would write about how that's affected the way I see things and how it has driven me to be just as or more successful than him.

My lack of world experience - I will be the first to tell you that I've lived a quite sheltered life. This essay topic would be centered around how I've been told what to do and how to think for the majority of my life and my strong wanting to break free of the "shackles" that have been pressed upon me and experience things for myself.

The problem with #1 is that the colleges are going to want to admit your father, not you. I completely understand what you’re going for, but it’s way too likely that it’ll be an essay about him and his success when the focus should be 100% on you. If anything, I’d kind of want to write about the reverse of this, and talk about how just because you’re a Jr, it’s always been important to be your own person and stuff. Which kind of ties in to your second idea.

2 is also a little risky because it’s not a great idea to say “I’m really sheltered and have been told what to do/think for my entire life BUT I want to change that!”. It’d be better if it was “I WAS really sheltered but then I learned to do/think for myself!” If you haven’t exactly broken free of the shackles yet, they might just see you as someone with potential but who hasn’t actually done anything about it yet.

Thank you so much for your feedback!
