College Essay Topic

Hello CC community! As I start the application process, I am concerned about my Common App essay topic. In the essay I have already wrote out and revised, etc, I talk about growing up in a Jewish and Christian family, how that affected me in school (stereotypes etc), but ultimately "not caring" about the bullying because I actually do not have a religious preference. However, I feel like this topic is commonplace, and I believe I have a better one to write. Common app Topic: Transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Essay Topic: Video Game Addiction. Intro: Talk about the actual video game Body: Affects of being addicted to this video game (social and family issues) Conclusion: Talk about how I was forced out of it and the affects of that. I know I can write a solid essay, so do not concern yourself about the structure/style of the topics in hand. I just want to know which topic you guys think makes a better college essay. Thank you very much.

Definitely do not write an essay about bullying. My mother’s friend works in the admission office at Texas A&M University, and they strongly frown upon bullying essays due to the fact that to some extent almost everyone is bullied at some point in their lives, and so it doesn’t make you unique. Now, your second topic isn’t a bad topic, but make sure that is something that you are truly passionate about because colleges are mostly looking for voice throughout your essay, they want to “meet” you through it for lack of a better word. So, if you truly find video game addiction fascinating, and can convey your excitement through a well-developed essay, then I strongly recommend choosing that topic, but don’t write about it if you don’t really like it.

Its not necessarily about bullying, its more of how growing up with 2 religions caused me not to be religious through various means. I am definitely more passionate about the video game addiction, and I believe I can write a very captivating intro to that essay. Thank you a bunch
