I am a freshman and wish to bring my car to UC Davis. I hear that it is difficult for freshmen to obtain permits, so what do I need to do to get one. I hear I need to get a job, but can someone be a little more specific. Thanks.

go to taps.ucdavis.edu for explanations of permits.

As far as I know, the getting an on-campus job/buying a permit thing is just a rumor - unless someone here posts supporting evidence otherwise (like a personal experience, or experience of a good friend, or documentation online).

You could park in the area around the dorms (not on campus). I have a few friends who do that. Just to note, the taps ^@$*@$& go around everyday and give tickets. Maybe you can get an upperclassman to get the permit for you? Im not 100% sure how the permit process goes...but if they don't check ownership of the car, go for it.

"Maybe you can get an upperclassman to get the permit for you?"

This idea has been thought of before, but if caught both you & the upperclassmen who bought it get in deep trouble. TAPS runs the liscense plate number of the car to see who it is registered to & then scan the barcode on the permit. If the names match (or have the same last name) then you're fine. For this reason, you can't even borrow a friend's permit for a day.

Yeah.. park in one of the neighborhoods off campus & then be prepared for a bus ride or long walk to your car. You'll have to go to your car & move it around often enough that the police don't think it's abandoned.

My friend who goes there says she just parks near the dorms w/ no problem. Guess it's different for everyone.
