College Freshman Driving

I'm a college student and want to buy a car,but my college doesn't want freshmen to drive or have a permit. Is there an excuse I could use that would make them let me have a car. I really just need it to get to a basketball gym, because tryouts are at the end of september. But the school has no gym or even weight room avaliable on campus. I go to Southern Unversity A&M. I just want to park by the dorm not park at the school and parking spaces are not a problem there are spaces all over the place just 24 credit rule is in my way. SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!!

WWJD? Seriously, are you asking how you can lie to the university to get your own way?

You know what is much cheaper (and in this case, more ethical) than buying a car, gas, parking, insurance and maintenance just so you can go to the gym? Call a cab or hire one of many senior students who would probably love to make money on the side being your chauffeur when you need to get to the gym.

Are you sure that there’s no gym on campus? The [Student Affairs](http://web.subr.edu/index.php?id=739) website has recreational gym hours listed. It also mentions a weight room and an intramural basketball team (so I assume that you’ll find basketball courts to practice on).

Gym aside, the university does not prohibit you from having a car. They just won’t let you park on campus. You can probably find a parking space off campus?

thanks but the one gym that has basketball courts is used by offices and classes and the weight room is used by the football team. They are building a new basketball gym, but that won’t be done until summer 2013. The closest gym is passed a freeway so it’s not walking distance. I’m just going to see if I can get one for dorm parking and not close to classes. There is nowhere off campus to park. Also the campus shuttle doesn’t go that far.

Don’t be so sure that there is nowhere off campus to park.

If the university does not allow freshmen to park on campus, this creates a business opportunity for people nearby, who can make money by renting parking spaces to students who want them. There may be people who have parking spaces that they would be delighted to let you use – for a price.

On Craigslist, in the Housing section, there’s a subsection called Parking/Storage. If there’s a Craigslist for your area, it wouldn’t hurt to see if there’s anything there that could be useful to you.

Years ago, I lived in a house 3 doors from the law school. Since we only had 4 cars in our backyard, we rented out the other 4 spaces to law students. Look around your college for what look like student-rented houses.

I wish I had a “like” button for Starbright’s post. Seriously, you are a believer and yet you are trying to figure out a way to fib about the reason you want a car for your Freshman year? Think about it.

I’m not trying to lie I just want to get to a gym,but there is no other way but to drive. I wouldn’t need a car if the school had a gym open. I’ve asked everywhere and everyone has told me they don’t have one for use, even the basketball coach has told me this.

Is there a Zipcar option? Or Hertz Connect? Many colleges today offer something like this.

Basketball courts are not outside? Most of our basketball courts are outside.

Your words are “Is there an EXCUSE that could MAKE THEM let ME have a car?” This seems to be a little selfish.

Why did you pick this university if you were considering basketball and they don’t have multiple gyms?

What excuse will you ask for in your sophomore year?
