Hello everyone
I am currently a junior residing in Connecticut. My school is ranked within the top 5 in Connecticut and approximately 300 in the country. My gpa is approximately a 3.5-3.6 out of a 4.0 unweighted, and around a 4.2 weighted. I also got a 2100 on my SAT. I am currently involved in many tutoring opportunities in my area, am involved in a business loaning program in developing countries, have volunteered at a local elementary school for 2 years, have been involved in the math team, science olympiad, and started a growing club with a few friends that is currently growing. I am currently interested in philosophy, psychology, engineering, physics, history, and English language. I was wondering what my chances were at a school like Boston College or New York University. I was also thinking smaller schools such as Oberlin College or Kenyon College. I honestly don’t care about school size at this point, as I feel there are both positives and negatives in both a large and small school. I was wondering what my chances were at these schools, and if you could think of any more colleges or universities that you think I may be a good fit at, I would really appreciate it!
I think you have a solid shot at both NYU and BC. What will make or break your application is the holistic section (essays, letter of rec, EC’s). You have to make yourself standout and interesting to whoever is reading your application. If you can do that then you will find yourself in a great place come March.
Thanks so much vlindo. Will I have the same chances next year when you apply do you think? I have heard that some of these schools are getting harder and herder to get into, which worries me a little bit.
@vlindo and @h012345:
Please read through past years of BC decision threads on this forum. You’ll read some with a stronger academic profile than you who did not get accepted to BC, and you’ll see those with a weaker academic profile who did get accepted.
While I agree you have a fairly respectable profile, do understand that no one, not even the adcoms, can tell you if you’ll get accepted.
What some here are very good at (scottj comes to mind) are to give you pointers on what you can do to strengthen your application to improve your chances.
In that case, what do all of you think I could do to strengthen my profile? @jpm50
@h012345 You could increase test scores but this is likely to do little for you. As @jpm50 stated, there have been people with higher scores who have gotten rejected and people with lower scores who have gotten accepted. The best way to improve your chances is by crafting a stellar essay and working on the holistic area of the application.
that makes sense @vlindo
what about other colleges such as bu, NYU, skidmore, colby, oberlin, and kenyon etc.
@h012345 You’re competitive at those, too. I’m applying to 18 schools myself.
Well good luck and thank you for all of your help!
and @vlindo, I’m assuming that when you say “competetive”, you’re saying that I would be a possible candidate for those schools too correct?
@h012345 Absolutely

Please spend time time reading through this CC forum’s threads on why “chance me” threads are so problematic and misleading.
