College Rivalries: Which ones are the best?

I've always thought it would be cool to have Penn and Penn State have a grand battle to determine who gets to name themselves after the state once and for all!

The best part is when Penn loses and can just rename itself Wharton U

lol i live in PA and watch sports. they don't even have to play eachother in football anymore, pitt still hates penn state and vice versa.

Indiana v. Purdue? Please. I go to IU and that rivalry is nothing.

Michigan v. OSU? I grew up in Ann Arbor. I'll recognize that rivalry but it's not the best.

I personally like Auburn v. Alabama. The "Iron Bowl". There's so much riding on that game in that state. Also, the whole pageantry of the Army v. Navy game is something to witness.

i'd have to say OSU-Michigan in terms of sports and then Harvard-Yale more holistically.

I live in Ohio and all my friends go to OSU, so I hear the michigan trash talk and its only really bad during football season.

However, I go to Harvard, and there is always Yale-bashing. It's all in good fun of course, but i hear it year around whenever Yale is mentioned...

UNC? Are you talking about that dump 8 miles down the road? It is not our rival, but it tries. It's cute. :)

IMO, to test whether two colleges truly have a rivalry:

If they lose every game of the season, but win their rivalry game, will fans still consider it a great season?

With this regard, I think Alabama/Auburn is the best. The others I mentioned are nice (of course I'm a bit biased with Florida), but they don't come close to the intensity of Auburn/Alabama.

Football: Ohio State/Michigan
Basketball: UNC/Duke

How about Clemson/USC?? There are tons of "House Divided" items for sale due to the rivalry there.
Oh, yeah, and USC won the football game this past fall - Go Gamecocks!!

The Annapolis Cup

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/22/AR2006042201340.html

I'd say Army-Navy is a pretty big one, for sports anyway

KU- MU is a huge one.

Forget sports, or colleges, this rivalry predates, and played a role in instigating, the civil war.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleeding_Kansas
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Lawrence

The border war is re-fought, at least twice a year, on the basketball courts of each school. And no matter how mismatched the teams are on paper in a particular year, a war is just what the games usually amount to.

The rivalry is fueled by the fact that massive numbers of alumni of each school live in the Kansas City metropolitan area which is located between the two schools. And there's no professional basketball in the area, so college basketball is the focus of attention in the whole area, not just among students.

Miami-FSU
OSU-Michigan
FSU-Florida

Most aggresive game ever played: Miami-FIU (what a fight and what a loss for FIU.. 35-0)

I agree with monydad. I live in Kansas City, Missouri...and that MU-KU rivalry is insane!! Go MU!!!!!!!!!!!!

you mean KU.

Why don't you tell them all who your basketball arena's named for. Now there's a proud story...

No, I definitely meant MU!

Athletics...

Michigan - Ohio State
Army - Navy
Duke - UNC
Auburn - Alabama
Stanford - Cal
Florida State - Florida
Pittsburgh - West Virginia

FSU vs. UF
Boston College vs. Notre Dame
Boston College vs. BU (hockey)

FSU-UF
Auburn-Alabama
FSU-Miami

Army-Navy
UCF-USF - just kidding

actually try Duke - Wake Forest (I've noticed the competitiveness is definitely going up)

Notre Dame - USC.... Dosnt always happen but its gotta be a nice game! :)
