College Rivalries: Which ones are the best?

USC vs. UCLA. All the way!

Harvard and Yale...

but everyone knows that there's no really no contest. ;)

From what I've heard, the UNC-Duke rivalry affects everything, but it is most prevalent in sports.

NC State, UNC, Wake, and Duke are ALL each other's rivals, mostly because ACC basketball is big amongst people who don't really like racing in NC, and even amongst racing fans.

To A2WOLVES6: The reason you don't understand the Purdue-IU rivalry is because you weren't raised in IN. I agree that OSU-Michigan is definitely bigger/more widespread, but Purdue-IU is no picnic. It's starting to grow as Purdue regains prominence in basketball and IU gains a little respect in football.

Coming from Ohio, I must say that the OSU/Michigan rivalry is pretty huge. For at least 2-3 weeks before the game, everyone gets into the game.... OH-IO.

Ah, so many Michigan jokes.

ut-ou b/c ou steals all our d*mn players in recruiting... plus the game itself is an event, go eat corn dogs, funnel cake, and fried coke, then go watch drive ou back to its trailer park that is called the state of oklahoma

unc-duke (unparalleled in bball)
osu-mich- best in football
tx-a&m- aggies r losers

UNC? Are you talking about that dump 8 miles down the road? It is not our rival, but it tries. It's cute.

Them's fightin' words. After Duke's basketball showing this past year, I'm surprised Coach K still has a job. Wasn't it NC State that knocked them out of the ACC in the first round? Ha.

Duke basketball is on the decline. Look at UNC to dominate them for the next decade at least.

I have a good story about the Umich vs. OSU rivalry. So at my graduation they read the colleges of all the summa cum laude students and one girl was attending OSU (I attend a high school in MI that sends literally 70 to Umich and 100 to MSU) and when they read out "(name) will be attending OSU" the entire crowd (could've been 2000 people) booed her. My mouth was open in shock for at least 5 minutes.

Yeah, what GatorEng23 said. That's worth repeating.^ ;)

This is the best response so far.... period.

Duke vs. UNC..... Men's Basketball
UConn vs. Tennessee.... Women's Basketball

Michigan vs. Ohio State, Florida vs. Florida State, ND vs. USC........ Football

honestly no one cares about women's basketball

bennyblanco,
Stop being a sexist.....some of us do care about women's basketball and you'd be surprised at the size of the crowds (10,000+) that some schools are able to draw. The intensity is growing and so are the rivalries.

Here's a plug for the Northwestern women's lax team. Two-time defending national champs with wins over all of the lacrosse powers from Duke, Maryland, Johns Hopkins and U Virginia.

bennyblanco: We went to all the home games of NC State's women's basketball team (Coach Kay Yow's team) and also got to see a few of UNC's women's basketball team (when we could get tickets!). Duke's women's basketball team far surpassed their men's bb team this year, too. (And don't think people don't know it!).

Michigan-Ohio State may have the numerical and geographic advantage (two states with 20 million between them), but nothing beats the passion and intensity of Alabama-Auburn (1 state of 5 million). Households are literally divided by this rivalry. There is no middle ground: you're either for Alabama or Auburn.

My favorite rivalries:

Amherst vs. Williams is always intense and goes way back.

Pomona-Pitzer vs. CMS is another great one.

I'm biased towards LAC's..

Amherst vs. Williams..... not so much

Auburn-Alabama is a great one.... sorry for leaving it out

Perhaps not in terms of athletics, but we're academic giants!

That is true

the person who said no one cares about womens basketball has obviously never step foot in connecticut, tennessee, etc. uconn has had sell out or near sell out crowds every game for 12 years straight, and has every single game televised- not many mens basketball teams can say that.
