I have been thinking about what I want to minor in after I transfer from my community college. I am planning to become a teacher and I am thinking of minoring in psychology. I loved my psych class this past quarter and I had some questions. What preparation for my minor do I need to take? Should I follow Assist for the preparation? Or can I wait to start prerequisites once I transfer and just focus on my required classes for my major for now. Any advice ?
What is your major? The most important thing is to complete your major prereqs for transfer - you’ll have enough time to minor even if you don’t get a head start. If you do want to take additional psych classes toward the minor, look up the minor requirements at your desired CSU(s) and also look up the specific course articulation agreements between them and your community college. Some classes will count as specific courses and others will only be electives. If there are additional classes your CC offers, that will meet requirements for the minor, then there’s no harm in taking those if you have time, but it’s not a must.
I am currently an English major. I’ve recently thought about changing my major to Elementary Education but there is still a possibility that I might want to teach middle school english instead of elementary school. So that is why I haven’t changed majors yet.
I’m going to check to see which psych classes I can add to my educational plan for before I transfer.
In that case, also look at the education-oriented minors that your target CSU’s have, and how those classes map at your CC.
For example, at the schools I’m familiar with, there are two CC classes that articulate with courses in the Child and Adolescent Development department at the university. At the CC, the “Child Development” class is an FCS (Family & Consumer Studies) class, and the “Lifespan Development” class is the Developmental Psychology class in the Psychology department. These are the two required lower-division classes for the CHAD minor (out of five classes total). So it would be easy to get a head start on this minor. There’s also a CHAD major that’s specifically for aspiring teachers, and the four lower division requirements for that are those same two classes, plus intro psych and statistics. So, if the roadmaps look similar at your school(s), those two classes would be very smart to take.
For an actual psych minor, otoh, you’d need the Biological Psychology (a.k.a. psychobiology) class in the psych department, which can also count as a life science GE. And stats, which you’re likely taking anyway to meet the math GE.
