If you have applied or expect to apply to other colleges or universities this year, p

I'm looking at the Rice supplement and came across this obnoxious question. I really don't think it's their business where else one's applying. Has anyone just answered this in a general way, like a number of schools of similar quality, etc.? I'm thinking of dropping Rice off the list.

It is an optional question. I left it blank.

I suggest you do a search of this same question on this site. Many students have answered this question honestly and have ended up with merit scholarships from Rice (my son included). Why do you think the question is obnoxious? There’s really no downside here.

It would be like me asking them “Who else is applying to your school?.” I really don’t see what this has to do with their evaluation process. The previous responder said it was optional so I’ll leave it blank if that’s the case.

Why does Rice feel like they can ask for this information and no other school does?

I have had several universities ask me that question. I limit my response to three other schools that seem similar in size and selectivity as the school which is asking.

If you list schools similar in size and focus, it might show Rice you care more about ‘fit’ than ranking. It could also prompt them to offer financial/merit aid if they see themselves as competitive with the other schools for you.

Of course, it might just be used as general information so they can see what schools in general are competitive for their applicants. I didn’t think it could hurt or help much at all.

The idea of poaching students from other top schools and winning out on the cross-admit yield is perhaps the main motivation behind this…
But maybe I’m being to cynical.

Funny, botmeister, I’m cynical in the opposite direction – They’re also applying to Yale? If they get in they’ll leave us behind, so let’s reject them.

I agree, it is none of Rice’s business where else you apply. My son left that question blank two years ago when he applied. He was accepted with a very generous merit scholarship.

I still don’t know why this question and the signature page box cause such constant consternation.
