Colleges similar to Rice?

Can you suggest any colleges that are similar to Rice. I like the culture of the school (from the academics to the housing arrangements to the size). I would like to expand my college search to schools that are similar.

Maybe Yale. I haven’t found schools I really feel are very similar to Rice. Vanderbilt in some ways.

Vanderbilt is not like Rice. The culture is very different.

Yes, it is, but they are both D1 schools in cities with top academics. There are a lot of cross applicants. I am extremely familiar with both schools.

Brown and Tufts are said to have similar vibes to Rice.

Davidson…

Rice is unusual.
You’ll have a hard time finding other schools quite like it. Among the top 20 universities, maybe Yale (smallish urban university with a residential college structure). That does not help you at all if you’re looking for admission back-ups. Also consider: Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Vanderbilt (all about as selective as Rice); Wake Forest, University of Rochester, Brandeis. These are small-ish universities in more or less urban areas. The University of Chicago is another small-ish urban university with an undergraduate residential “house” system, top-notch academics, and an even geekier student culture (but no D1 sports and no engineering or architecture programs). It, too, is about as selective as Rice.

The military service academies in some ways are like Rice (size, academic quality, mix of liberal arts & professional programs, sports culture). They won’t work, obviously, if becoming a military officer does not appeal.

If you’re female, check out Barnard. That gives you the intimacy of a LAC but with access to all the resources of a major research university (Columbia), in a fantastic urban setting. Regardless of gender, consider a LAC that is part of a multi-school consortium: the Massachusetts 5-college consortium (which includes Amherst); the Philadelphia-area Quaker colleges (Haverford, Swarthmore, BrynMawr); or the Claremont Colleges in California (Pomona, CMcK, Harvey Mudd …). Most of these are about as selective as Rice, or more so, except for the women’s colleges.

Oh, and William & Mary.

Yale, UCSD, and to some extent, Stanford, Northwestern and Vanderbilt.

^ UCSD is a public university with nearly 30K students and a 19:1 S:F ratio. Rice is a very selective private university with fewer than 6K students and a 5:1 s:f ratio. I don’t see the similarity, other than warm weather.

Hmmm. what about emory?

Emory does get cross-applicants, but is not a D1 sports school and, in fact, has no football program. Lots of students don’t care about this, but some might. It is similar in that it is in the middle of a large city with a gorgeous campus. It also has a more northeast student body than Rice does.
