Colleges similar to Rice???

Can anyone suggest any colleges that are similar to Rice. I love the campus culture, the academics, the residential living set up, the size, etc. I would like to expand my college search to include schools that are similar in make up to Rice. A university or a liberal arts school is fine with me.

You can try another website that the forum here will not let me link to. It will show you the schools most similar to any given school, and you can read lots of student written reviews about any of them.

However, Rice is clearly the best…

I can’t speak from experience as Rice is the only college I have attended, but I do have many friends who were transfers to Rice. Honestly, if it is campus culture you are looking for, I don’t think you can find another school like Rice. It’s culture and undergraduate experience are like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

That said, if you are just looking for schools similar to Rice, I would suggest Harvard and Yale, which also have the residential college system; Emory, which seems to have a similar approach to academics and research; and a few others. The website Adam mentioned is definitely a good resource, although a lot of the information is opinionated so you can’t take any one comment for truth.

When my son was looking, and we looked at a lot of colleges, I felt that U of Chicago is most similar, although the weather is a bit different.

Maybe someone can confirm/deny this, but I have heard that Rice and WashU are similar (which is why I might apply to Rice RD if I don’t get in WashU ED).

Rice and WashU have similarities and differences. One of my sons is a Rice graduate and one of my sons currently attends WashU. They’re both really wonderful schools with a supportive, collaborative atmosphere and friendly down-to-earth incredibly bright students and caring faculty. I would think that a lot of students apply to both. Rice’s residential college system is quite different, though, with students assigned to colleges all 4 years. WashU houses all freshman together on the South 40. WashU has something called a residential college, but it’s not the same. WashU is also slightly more pre-professional with a lot of undergrad business majors and pre-med majors. They also both have nice campuses close to a large public park, a light rail and a zoo. Houston has a lot more to offer than St Louis, though. And a much better selection of restaurants!

And I should mention that both my sons have been extremely happy at their respective schools.

Thank you for all of your comments. They have all been very helpful.

I think WashU and Rice are merely similar. Me being from the Midwest, WashU definitely has that down to earth personality that most student from the Midwest have. The campus is beautiful especially the South 40 and just everything about the school academically is superb. But me personally, i would prefer Rice. One because i’m tired of Midwest weather and two, Houston is a better city than St. Louis with nicer weather. When i visited the school, St.Louis was kind of a down city. Not much to do besides downtown St. Louis and me being from Chicago, that was nothing. I’m am a junior in high school so take this statement with a grain of salt. This is just my opinion. WashU and Rice are similar but to me Rice is 10x better although I like WashU housing more than I do Rice. When I’m applying to colleges, in this exact order, my top 3 are:

Rice University (no doubt my top choice)

Washington University in St. Louis (a very good 2nd for me)

Stanford University (VERY iffy at this point)

I plan on majoring in engineering by the way. Probably electrical engineering or bio engineering.
