Hey:
I am currently a high school junior midway through my academic year. I'm having trouble determing what colleges to apply to next year, and was wondering whether you all could give me any suggestions. I am interested in humanities/social science/writing
with minor in music.

Here are my credentials:

G.P.A: 4.0 (unweighted)
Participant in the IB program (Anticipated Candidate)
SAT: 2150
CR-800
Math-700
Writing-650
NHS, SGA, leader (VP) in science club, member of model un, founder of the writing center at my school (ironic compared to my SAT huh?)

EC:
Violin:
11 years
Have been in all-state, honors all-state, "young all-stars" orchestra
Summer programs of Brevard Music Center and Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival (don't know if this is relevant)

Some colleges I am looking at:
Duke
UNC- Chapel Hill (NC)
Vanderbilt
Emory
Swathmore
Amherst
Brown

Are these colleges feasible choices? If not, how can I improve my resume and what other colleges would you all suggest.
Extra info: I am from a small town in eastern NC, and would probably like to stay on the east coast for undergrad.

Those colleges are reaches for almost anyone, but you do have very good stats. If you want to stay in NC, look into Elon. It’s reputation is growing, at least here in the northeast. If you want to come north, you may want to check out Bard. They have a dual enrollment with their conservatory, if you want to keep playing the violin.

Brown and Duke are very high reaches if you are not URM, legacy, or recruited athlete. You should consider retaking the SAT for at least 2250+ to reduce them from high reaches to reaches. UNC- Chapel Hill (NC) is a safety. The other ones are match/reach. Seems like you have a lot of reach schools, not enough match/safety.

I would add NYU since it has a strong music/humanities department.

And you can definitely get into UNC- Chapel Hill (NC), Vanderbilt,Emory, Swarthmore
If I were you, I would add more reach schools like Cornell, Columbia, etc.

What did you get on your PSAT? Have you gotten your score yet?

Looks like you have a good reach list and UNC-CH is a match for you since you’re instate.

Have you talked to your parents about how much they’ll spend on college? If money is no object, then you’ll easily find some more matches and safeties. However, if money is an issue, then you’ll have to carefully select matches and safeties based on what kind of merit scholarships and/or financial aid you would qualify for.

I want to say good job on getting 800 on that CR section. You need to really be good at that stuff to do well on it.
I’d suggest taking the ACTs. A lot of students do well on the ACTs. Since you got the reading section down, I don’t think science would be hard for you since it’s similar to critical reading. Math and writing sections are easier on the ACTs.
To the extent of me not liking your ECs, I have to say I would aim at lower caliber schools.
Good luck!

Thanks all for your comments! I was just throwing out names, but have not done in-depth research for any of the listed universities.
My parents are willing to pay around 15K, but I would like to get as much of a scholarship as I can for any of these universities.
I do plan to take the SAT one more time, as I am only a junior.
Is there anything else one should do to strenghten their resume? Thanks!
