Hahaha.

Smithsonian College

The worst college names are those that are pronounced one way by their alumni, and another way by everyone else in the world. Harvard is the very worst: ask an alumnus where he went to school, and he'll bow his head slightly, wince a little, and reply with what sounds like a question, with one long syllable followed by two short ones: "UhhhHarvard?"

Seriously? Are Harvard alumni really that apologetic about their alma mater? I guess I either don't know any, or else no one I know really cares where anybody went to college.

It's meant to be self-deprecating. Some of them refer to it as "dropping the H-bomb."

Greybeard,

I've observed this phenomenon.

I have been trying to figure out why so many people have posted that Kalamazoo is a bad name for a college. Kalamazoo is a beautiful name derived from a Potawatomi word and a college town (Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University). I can see thinking of Kalamazoo as a funny or cute name, but certainly not bad or ugly. Most recently Kalamazoo is known for the "Kalamazoo Promise" which guarantees every high school graduate in the city a free or partially free college education. However, I don't think it's for an education at Kalamazoo College, but for any state college, including the University of Michigan.

Not bad or ugly, it just isn't very collegey.

A bad one: Oglethorpe
