Colleges with best/worst names

worst: oglethorpe

colgate was named after the great toothpaste conesseur.

Best:
-Harvard
-Stanford
-Middlebury
-Princeton
-Claremont McKenna (someone else said they didn't like this; I think it's beautiful!)
-Letter schools (UVM, UCLA, UVA, UNR, UNL[V], USC, UCSC, UPS)
-Marquette/Milliken/Marshall

Worst:
-Kalamazoo
-Kenyon
-Arcadia (Beaver was almost better in my opinion...)
-Gustavus Adolphus (!!!!)
-Albion

WashU is really unfortunate. Adding "In St. Louis" back in the 70's kind of cheapens the school, in my opinion (like Indiana University of Pennsylvania). I wish they marketed themselves just as "WashU", because that's a much more attractive name.

That school could really benefit from a re-organizing of its "corporate identity", for lack of a better word.

Muhlenberg is just :-X imo.

"Bad: Cornell, Lehigh, Case Western Reserve, Ursinus, Villa Julie (PA), Pepperdine (pretty school, sounds like a gimmicky salt/pepper shaker company), Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey (they could do so much better).

Special categories:

Schools named after 19th century industry barons and family
- Duke
- Stanford
- Vanderbilt
- Carnegie Mellon
- Rice"

somewhat surprising post, as Cornell and Case Western Reserve--two of your "bad" names--also fit in your last category. You have also missed numerous others in that category.

Favs: UC Berekely "CAL", Wake Forest, Princeton, Texas A&M (Better just saying 'A&M), Penn
Duke and Stanford are not bad names, you kind get an air of royalty and class when thinking of those names

Gonzaga isn't that bad. Though being a CA native makes me found of spanish/mexican names.
Worst: University of Phoenix (that is everwhere but phoenix), Brandeis, Gustavius (MIN), "directional" schools (western/Northern/eastern/southern), Reed College, maybe Rutgers

One of the schools that made the NCAA playoffs was something like: University of Texas at Corpus Christi, which is not unlike the the UIIPI (or something) from previous playoffs. 15 minutes of fame...

Any college that names itself not after a state but after an entire geographical region is hilarious.

University of the Pacific. No, not just California. Not just Oregon. The WHOLE FREAKING Pacific.
Sewanee: University of the South
College of the Southwest (in New Mexico)

University of Redlands has a great sound to it. . . like the whole school is in the middle of the woods, and classes take place in treehouses.

WORST: East Stroudsburg State. It sounds like a school for bakers.
Brown--just not a nice color
Samford-sounds like Stanford, but so isn't.

Best: Emory, Duke, Harvard, Carleton
Worst: Stephen F. Austin State University

Adult: so where are you planning on going?
Student: Stephen....
Adult: no, i'm Mike
Student: Stephen F...Austin..
Adult: Austin? like UT Austin?
Student: no...Stephen....F.....Austin.....State.....
Adult: are you done?
Student: almost...

Oh yeah ? Anyone heard of Ball State ?? ROFL ! (I haven't read all 41 pages...)

yea...and the whole rolling admission joke

Coming from NYS, I always LOVED the names of the towns and schools that were based on native american words... familiar enough not to sound strange, yet unusual and melodious to English speakers...

Geneseo, Oneonta, Oswego

Other NYS names I am not sure of derivation, but they are towns as well as schools (not that they are well known schools) Cassanovia, Fredonia

And one's that sound bad to me... New Paltz, Purchase

Stony Brook sounds like an idyllic LAC but is a monstrously huge state school...

College names are like place names or all proper names: they all sound odd until you hear them so often they just become signifiers of the thing they name!

S

i actually like Duke, Brown and Rice (as well as Vandy, Middlebury and UVA and especially Miami U).

I dislike Amherst, Colgate, Tufts, Ball State, Bob Jones, Lewis and Clark and American... American isn't a weird word it is just a weird word for a University...

I hate all the names of the schools in NYS except Rochester, Syracuse and NYU .... they are just awfull !! No offence New Yorkers ! lol

Even Columbia?

I think the worst by far has to be Rensellaer or however the hell you spell it say it or whatever. It's so bad that it's just "RPI".

Bob Jones.

Because if I met someone named Bob Jones, I woudl think they're a spy.

Groenveld9, all the NYS ones you like are cities. There's no creativity or uniqueness to their names at all.

worst is University of Maryland--University College

Best: Channel Islands (they really fool you with the name). Campus is actually an old mental hospital, Monterey Bay (not actually in Monterey, built on old military fort), Wake Forest (I don't know why, but I love the name), George Mason University, George Washington University, Seton Hall

Worst: Harvey Mudd, anything with Idaho in it, Sacramento State, Dominguez Hills, Ole Miss, Buffalo, Xavier, Tulsa
