Skidmore...sounds dirty
Bentley...the car has overshadowed it in recent years
Smith and Williams...why not just name it "Common English Surname U."

Juliard sounds cool

Juliard sounds cool

leejwwc,

Actually, Sewanee is The University of the South, which may not be much better. It has generally been called just Sewanee by those who have attended. And then, as I'll bet you know, one must make sure that one is not referring to the river in Florida, spelled Suwannee.

I have trouble with Hobart and William Smith.

Ursinis is a tough one!

"I have trouble with Hobart and William Smith"
Whenever I mention it people always do a double-take and say "Harvard?" lol.

best name: Wellesley, NYU(sounds "cool"), and Georgetown.
worst: Ursinis, Ball State, Kalamazoo, and Geneseo.

Garland-
It used to be called Slippery Rock State Teachers college (I sent away for the application just to freak out my dad back in the 70's). It is now, ahem, Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Gee, think the second half of their new name sounds like anything familiar??? :)

haha Worst - Widener.

I remember getting mail from Ursinis...I just couldn't take it seriously because of the name.

Wait, how is Bowdoin pronounced?

We always used to wish that there was a Sam Houston Institute of Technology just so we could buy the sweatshirt.

one of the worst name evers for a college: Wunkers University

Best: University of the Redlands

my mistake....well scranton still sounds weird

Good: Channel Islands
Bad: Chico State

Ripon

Always makes me think: Ripoff

Best: Bryn Mawr, Princeton, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Furman (FU), Drexel, Auburn

Worst/Confusing: Miami University (it's not in Florida!)
Wake Forest (it's in Winston-Salem not Wake Forest!)
Washington University in St. Louis (too awkward)
Colby (cheese?)
Duke (too many UNC friends refer to it as Dook or Dookies  )
Cornell University/College (which one do you mean???)
Boston College (it's not in Boston!)
Case Western Reserve (no, it's not associated with the military)

Because I'm from Minnesota, I can say Macalester and Carleton. I've always liked the sound of Dartmouth, too. Wesleyan and Wellesley, with all their confusion, are attractive names as well. Princeton is just a given. Although, I wasn't a fan at first, I like Brown's name because it's the color of chocolate...yum.

DON'T YOU GUYS DARE RUIN THAT FOR ME BECAUSE I KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO GO WITH THAT...

Wait, how is Bowdoin pronounced?<<

Like "Boden".

worst:

swarthmore - sounds like a wart-hog. "swarthy"!
wofford - i keep thinking of a geeky kid with buckteeth using his calculator and scribbling in a notebook
teikyo post university - sounds like it should be in japan...

best
colgate - it just sounds so... fresh! =)
princeton - a little snotty sounding, but still

New Jersey City University

Is it named after New Jersey or Jersey City???? Or both, in some nebulous way?

Cal State University Chico- CSUC (See-Suck)

UC Merced (I dunno why, I just don't like the upstart)

Even though it's a nice college, the worst would have to be Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Or Slippery Rock U of PA. Ugh, all I can imagine is a pilgrim slipping on a rock. Don't ask. :)

The best would have to be Princeton. I don't like the ivies, but that's a lovely name.
