Johns Hopkins was named for the man, a philanthropist, businessman, abolitionist and Quaker. He died with no heirs, and left 7 million to the University, which equals about $86,542,022 in today's money.

His first name, Johns, wasn't a unfortunate mistake of his parents, but instead the surname of his great grandmother, Margaret Johns. Poor guy.

"i always thought Tufts and Yale sounded peculiar...
of course, Duke, Vanderbilt and Stanford are all kinda retarded, who names a university after themself? Actually, Stanford is double-retarded, as the actual name of the University is Leland Stanford Jr. University... leland knew it was dumb to name a university after himself, so he named it after his dead son, who, suprisingly, had the same last name."

Right.. so he waited for his son to die just so he could name the university after him.

Anyways,
BEST: Wellsley, Amherst, Princeton, Vanderbilt, Berkeley (when UC isn't in the title), Notre Dame
WORST: Cal State Dominguez Hills, Drexel, Xavier, Pepperdine

Whoops, just looked it up; his son died of typhoid in his teens.

Sure, maybe people confuse it with UMass but going by the sound of the name... Amherst just sounds so prestigious. And yes, add Columbia; I have no idea how I overlooked it.

Hmmm, I never thought of Brown in that context until people here started to say it that way. I always thought it sounded nice and professional. Oh well.

Bad ones:
-Washington University in St. Louis (You have to say the whole thing or people don't know what school you mean)
-Northwestern (well, the "north" part is right)
-University of Chicago (sounds like a public school = misleading)
-Dartmouth (sounds immature and my mouth hurts everytime I read it)

Good Ones:
-Loyola (has a ring)
-Harvard
-Stanford
-Vassar

Best: Columbia, Columbia, and did I say Columbia yet? (And there's nothing wrong with ignorant people thinking you are going to Colombia for some of that good stuff ;))

Worst:
Gordon College ("It's Gordon the fisherman" LMAO, remember the commercials?)

And I personally express my sympathy for anyone going to Cornell College (not university) and Haverford, hehehehe.

The Good: Bryn Mawr (very pretty/feminine), Johns Hopkins (am I the only one who likes it?), Stanford (it just sounds nice).

The Bad: Ursinus (I am seriously considering this college, but the name makes me giggle everytime they send me something) and Middlebury (ack!).

best : princeton, stanford, UCLA, Upenn (its cool)
worst:colgate(everybody asks is that a university or a toothpaste ?)
texas christian u (awkward)
duke ( duke of what london , cornwall??!!!)
ball state (funny )
washington in st louis( too long )
dartmouth ( reminds me of flies i dont know why , i dont like this name)
yale ( when i first heard of it a university named yell , why not shout ,cry)
