hello my name is ariel i moved here like 5 years ago knowing no english whatsoever. When i first started high school i didnt really care but by the end of my soph year i realized how important it is to get good grades and to get involved in school. in a nutshell i have a 3.3 average GPA (im ajunior so i could possibly go higher) i am inloved with my school specially the diversity comitee i try to get hispanics students to care more about school while at the same time making the school aware of its latino students in several ways, like right now im painting a mural at the school about latino culture. I have done swimming for a season then i did track for 3 years, i got a 21 on my act but i want to be at least a 24 before i apply for sure. Im a doing full time post secondary at the local community college which for those who dont know its like you basically are a college student so by the time i apply i will have a year of college done. To the POINT! i want to apply to UF (university of florida) do i have a shot right now? does the fact that i live in minnesota, or that im doing post secondary or the fact that i am colombian help?

Hola Colombiam! Que tal? I am not sure of how lucky your citizenship might help but have you realized that Florida has a lot of LAtinos and Hispanics? So I am not sure about how you will bring diversity to the school in term of culture. As a person from Latin America I do know that the Hispanophone culture varies from countries to countries but I still think that a place where students from your country are completely absent or are just a minority will be less competitive. It does not mean that you can't get into UF. Indeed, you are unique and different from even those who have the same cultural heritage than you. A good friend of mine who was from Bogota got. into it with a full ride so there can be some exception. I don't know if the fact that you are living in Min... will help or not.

I know that you feel you will complete a college year while you are still in HS but most universities will ask you to apply as a Freshman like your regular HS classmates.

As an international s. myself, all I can tell you is to do well in your toefl test and your SAT. Even if you have being living in the US for five years, colleges has some doubts about the English profiency of Intl S. Believe me, they will judge your English perfomance on the same level than native English speakers Try to do your best in the English part of the SAT1. You should also try to look for other colleges in addition to UF so you can always have a safety or back up school.

UF is getting harder and harder to get into but i know friends who have gotten in with much less.

i keep hearing that they want people from minnesota b/c of our education level which i dont think is like amazing lol

Why don't you get everything and give it a try?

Colombiano, si no vas applicar al collegio as an international student, you can check the Hispanic fund scholarship if you are applying for finaid. It's not scam, I got it from my school.

Hispanic College Fund | Home.

pero es para entrar a UF o en general?
engl: but is it to get into UF or in general?

Pienso que no es solamente para los estudiantes de un collegio especial. Pienso que debes ver la pagina y buscar las informaciones que quieres asi podras escoger una beca. It will depend on whcih scholarship you apply for.
English: I think that it is not for students who will be attending a specific college. You should check the web site and look for the information that you would like to have so you can choose which scholarship to apply for.

I'm a junior living in Florida. I've visited UF's campus multiple times and am relatively well-informed about them. I'm not sure how you'll fare when you apply, but here's some info on the school that hasn't reached Princeton Review or College Board yet:
This year, UF accepted less than 25% of applicants. I think it was something like 29,000 applied, 7,000 got in.
Also, last year was the first time in the school's history that the average weighted GPA among the incoming freshman class was above a 4.0, and its gone up again this year.

Clearly, UF's gotten much more difficult to get into, and as GA said, we're in a state with a relatively large Hispanic population.

It's definitely possible for you to get in, but I'd try to make yourself stand out a little bit more if you want to increase your chances.
