Columbia Class of 2020 RD Thread

@efebrkn I received a likely letter, and I’m an international from Canada! My stats are on a chance me thread

How many LLs go out per year?

@snusnu i’m not quite sure about the number, but last time i asked that question here someone replied that it goes out to approximately 30% of the total accepted students

Isn’t it too much?

30% indeed sounds too much; but if you eliminate the recruited athletes/musicians or so, you’ll be left with like 10% of LL applicants, or maybe less. But stay chill, and decisions are just around the corner. Good luck to everyone!

@AlphaX That’s a ridiculous set of assertions you’ve made about NYU vs. Columbia, to be blunt. How NYU manages its money and its FinAid policies is not a mystery. The fact that CU has a better endowment and can pour more $ into fin aid is independent of what NYU does. Also you should know that for NYU profs “taking vacation” – why lay blame to them? There’s something called the labor market. DXXX straight that person gets to go on summer vacation. Why shouldn’t she or he?

This is akin to saying Neiman Marcus employees should get less time for lunch breaks b/c their items cost more than Macy’s.

It’s understandable that two similar colleges in NYC might have similar fin aid, quality, etc. But it’s simply not the case and no one should be shocked otherwise.

No one is forced to apply to NYU despite their rotten Fin Aid policies. Yet they have no issues filling out each freshman class…

@T26E4 I am curious as to why you defend NYU so much. One simple search online would give you substantial amounts of information validating my claims. Just because a school has a lower endowment it doesn’t mean that they are incapable of providing good financial aid to students. And NYU definitely shouldn’t have a problem doing this.

I blame NYU professors for taking vacations because they do so with the colleges money. Its literally in the top five for highest paid professors. It’s no surprise that Columbia is very high up there too, but it provides great financial aid as well.

Yes, one should completely be shocked when two institutions of similar caliber have such disparities in providing for their students. And you are right, no one is forced to apply to NYU. However, it is the dream school of many students. And I don’t think they should be financially punished for wanting to go there.

I don’t disagree that their Fin Aid is rotten. But it’s not yours or my call. I can’t afford it. Many others can’t either. It’s not NYU’s job to necessarily be affordable. And it’s certainly not the fault of the professors or workers at NYU. They’re out for themselves, as they should be. Economics 101, look up “labor market”.

Write a letter to the NYU corporation. They set the budgets. But we veer from the thread topic greatly. I’ll not say anymore on this.

@Vanskelig I was just wondering, are you an international applicant?

IM SO NERVOUS DECISIONS NEED TO COME OUT ALREADY (even though I’m quite certainly expecting a rejection)

@MIA2020 I am not. What makes you think so? (just curious)

@Vanskelig your username. It literally means “difficult” in Norwegian so I just thought you might be from Scandinavia or something :slight_smile:

When are decisions announced for Rd students?

@PickyParent March 31 5 P.M. EST

Thank you! Ok and when was the likely letter sent?

Down to Columbia and Brown this week. I wish everyone well! Wondering how they pull 2K out of 36K applications/essays/interviews

Hi. I’m new to this. I was wondering if there are any deferred students, and if any of you wrote a letter on intent.

@yestobrown
I got deferred and sent a simple email reiterating my interest in Columbia while notifying them of some new accomplishments.

Thank you! Good luck!

Columbia emailed my school counselor that 5 students got in from my school. I know 6 who applied, but two of the 6 got rejected from UC Berkeley (lack of extra curricular activities). Praying that I’m one of the five guys!!
