I think just the titles
@imrobin52 which part of north california are you? im currently at columbia seas and always excited to see someone from my area get in since there’s so few
@mayadaud13 Write the book if you wish. But don’t count on it having any effect on your college search unless it’s of a quality where a commercial publisher is willing to invest in it (and you). My DD published a book as part of her IB curriculum. Anyone can self-publish.
Like I said, if finishing a manuscript is important to you, then do it for yourself. However, it it detracts from other priorities (schoolwork, test prep, other ECs), then I’d advise against it
@ayudameporfavor East bay area!
Hi! I’m also planning to apply to Columbia University this upcoming year ED, i live in jacksonville florida but I’m from the U.S. Virgin Islands
Hello there, I am an international student and can’t decide whether applying Harvard’s or Columbia’s Early application program? Could anyone give some advice.
@FlyingCeline Because columbia is ED, it has a higher acceptance rate as opposed to harvard’s REA program which has many more legacy/athlete students. However, if you are amazing enough, then Harvard would be a better choice for you. Some people say that the HYPSM rejects go to Columbia, but I disagree after seeing a lot of them transfer over to Columbia after one or two years (heh). whichever one you like more, then you should choose. If it’s prestige, harvard. if you love all of the other things columbia has, then obviously columbia
Hey guys! I’m super excited to be applying to Columbia this upcoming year. To get some more conversation stirring, why don’t we all post why we have Columbia as our 1st choice! For me, the prospect of living in NYC for my undergrad experience while still having the “campus feel” and top notch academics is a huge pull.
I’ve got a specific professor and a club that I really like
either the neuroscience department or the location
@imrobin52 @technogirl21 When it asks for the book list, just list the titles. (If you have enough words left or the title is a bit vague, then put the author.)
Columbia is my first choice because the SEAS also has a liberal arts element attached to it. The school also uses the city a lot.
As a current student - if you like Harvard more than Columbia and you feel like you’d be a competitive applicant there, I would recommend applying there SCEA. ED is binding and you don’t want to live with the could’ve, would’ve, should’ve. However, if you like them equally/CU more, and have researched them well, I’d recommend EDing because it does increase your chances somewhat.
CU is an excellent school, and I’ve never felt that I’ve had a lesser experience than if I would’ve attended HYP or other schools. In general, people in real life don’t talk about this stuff, unless it’s a joke. However, each school definitely has a different student experience, and you should know/research that.
@ecouter11 gives GREAT advice. For those who are actually viable candidates and are admitted, the differences between schools like CU or Dartmouth or MIT or Yale are about personal fit. Outsiders, with USNWR rankings on the brain, will try to say A>B>C. To us insiders, we know that’s rubbish.
One long-time poster developed a satirical “prestigiosity” ratings scale – the unit of measure is the “milli-Harvard”. It’s quite funny. Harvard =1.000 and Stanford and Yale were like 0.998 and such.
It’s all smoke and mirrors. The people who matter, know that fantastic grads come from a wide number of schools.

There’s the link. Quite a nice read
Any current CU students on the forums to give more advice? @ecouter11 Are you a current student or an alumni?
please read carefully, especially as a prospective student at a top tier university
@SSundee Don’t be so rude to popper345. He/She simply misread the post.
@QueenOfBohemia I didn’t mean to come across as rude, but the first few words of the post in question say what (s)he is asking.
@SSundee That’s okay, but popper didn’t need the reminder about being a prospective of Columbia.
It’s fine, next time I’ll read more carefully. Anyway, @ecouter11 do you have any advice for us? Did you apply ED or RD?
