Columbia to UMich?

Hi, I'm a student at Columbia University and I want(need) to transfer to UMich for personal and financial reasons. (There might be a million posts that start like this but bear with me) I'm currently a freshman and want to enroll in the Spring 2007 term which I'm guessing is the beginning of the second semester. I'm wondering if anyone can weigh in on whether or not this is a dumb idea and I should just wait for fall 2007 to transfer. I know one semester in college is not alot but I was accepted to UMich last year as well as into the Honor's program so my HS record was good enough for them (atleast it was last year)....what do you guys think? If I do well my first semester at college is this a plausible idea?

Thanks so much for helping....

also, my parents don't know that I've wanted to go to UMich for a while but I just felt so torn between Columbia (cmon its Columbia, I know its horrible but I'm only human) and U Mich. I just found out about the financial situation so its just another reason for me to leave (I'd be paying instate tuition)...I dunno how to break it to them that a. I don't want to be here anymore, and b. Its not just because of the money.

i don't think any college has spring admissions, maybe for the fall!?

but i'd think you'd have to get it squared away with your parents first...

I know UMich does spring transfers....haha, I'm also asking for advice on how to tell them. I know they'll be ****ed, but its something I really know I need to do.

hm... they might be mad, but then again they probably won't be that ****ed cuz you will be saving them money.

then again, if they say they can pay for it, than they probably can.

thanks for responding, I'm less worried about my parents though and more worried about when I should actually transfer. Spring 2007 or Fall 2007? what do you think?

just transfer for spring. a lot of people do, and you'll be saving a semester's worth of tuition from not going to columbia.

i was also considering going to columbia, but it just wasn't for me. i don't know why, but the campus was just way too small and i didn't like being in nyc. also, i didn't think it was up to par with hyps or even upenn for that matter.

yea I agree about why Columbias not ok, the campus does feel very small and the city too big...thanks for the response

Apply for spring - you'll get in and save money. I would probably agree that it's a bad idea (degree wise) to go from Columbia to UMich, but what matters more is that you enjoy your college years. You're not interested in Penn/Harvard/Yale? Coming from Columbia, you could likely get into a lot of other comparable schools. Michigan is great but it will be seen as a step down considering how exclusive your current school is.

no, I don't want to consider those other schools, they're too expensive and I know it would be a "step down" but Michigan is a good school and I'm more interested in going to a top tier school for graduate school, which is something I risk not being able to do financially (at all) if I stay here. Also I'm really not happy here. haha

thanks for your comments guys, really appreciated, anyone else?

Michigan only accepts spring transfers in LSA, and it's a very limited number of spots.

really? on their website it lists deadlines for a fall, winter, spring and summer application so I assumed you could transfer at any of those times....

Also, by spring having limited spot numbers, does fall have more? Would I have a better chance of getting in (statistically) if I applied for Fall 2007?

thanks guysss

man.
you got into columbia. you got into michigan honors last year.

you will have NO problem getting in.

see you in january then.. haha.

seriously don't worry a/b it.

If the people at Michigan have half a brain they won't reject a student from Columbia.

forgiven, do you go to Michigan? how is it? are the classes ridiculously large?

also, thanks everyone for sayin I'll get in, but I always tend to leave room for the chance that I don't get in, you never know who's better than you, so I just want to do all the things I that I can control to up my chances. thanks though, its a nice confidence booster :)

so on that note, do you guys think 15.5 credits and a lower gpa than maybe 12.5 credits and a better gpa (there's no promise of any gpa cause the classes here are difficult for me to judge in terms of difficulty) is better? or worse? the reason is that one of my classes(lang course) is only worth 2.5 points, but i know the language very well I just couldn't pass the test for a higher level bc I'm a very slow reader and writer when it comes to the characters. (its japanese) so i'm reasoning with myself that 4 classes is enough, but elementary japanese seems like such a blow off when I'm already proficient in the language.....thoughts? ps I'm a freshman going through transitions and not liking the new school at all, so will academic and personal stress be too much to handle?
