Columbia Transfer Fall 2010

I am also applying for Columbia fall 2010 (seas)! I attend University of Florida. I have a 3.8 gpa, I do research in the Materials Science and Engineering department working with ceramics and diffraction, I will have two really strong recs, and good essays, high school gpa was a 6.1 weighted. MY SATs were 1390 out of 1600 and subject tests: Math level II: 690, Literature: 650

any thoughts?

Did anyone confirmation through their e-mail after submiting Part II of the application?

for the online recommendation form, when we fill it out online… where it says first name and last name, do they want ours? or the professors?

would columbia mind if i send them 2 recs instead of 1? I already gave the forms to my second teacher and he’s already mailed it (the rec is amazing though)

@pinky, i’m also applying to barnard, but i’m not gonna bother with it till late march (more priority on columbia obviously)

I am sending two also… cause both are really good… I dont think they will count it against you.

Hi all, I’m Amanda. I transferred to Columbia (Columbia College) from Middlebury this year and never looked back.

Anyway - I was thinking about how I was working on my transfer app at this time last year, and I thought I’d pop back into College Confidential.

I just wanted to offer my help, if you need it. I can’t look at essays unfortunately but I’d be happy to answer any general, basic questions about the Columbia transfer process on this thread (although I can’t promise they’ll be incredibly timely). The transfer community here is great, and many of my best friends are transfers, so get psyched.

One thing that’s important to know is that the acceptance rate last year for transfers was 4 percent.

It’s rough, but if you’ve made a solid effort to get involved at your current institution, and show that Columbia will REALLY improve your academic experience, it’s totally possible. I kind of applied on a whim (it was the only school I applied to) and am still sort of in shock that I was accepted (I was rejected the first time), but my first year of college saw a lot of growth and maturation (academic and otherwise) in me, and I’m glad they realized it.

good luck!

When did you receive your application track ID? ( I still haven’t receive yet. maybe Columbia don’t even want to look at my application)

Hey Amanda,

I just finished my Why does your present school not meet your needs essay, but I took a strict approach to it. I talked all about my present institution but neglected to mention Columbia at all. Should I be talking about Columbia as well? I’m already over by 250 words (they recommend 250 whereas I have 500ish).

qiangouzi, I received it very early in the process. You should call admissions.

Solace, I wouldn’t talk too much about Columbia, because there is a separate essay for that. Focus on the reasons why your present school isn’t good for you.

Thanks Amanda! Another question though: How essential is it to talk about the Core?

Gender: M
State: NJ
current school: Middlesex Community College

College GPA & Year: Soph 3.87 GPA (after 57 earned credits)
H.S. GPA: 3.6 GPA

SAT (full breakdown): 580 reading, 560 math, 520 writing (ghastly), SAT II 620 U.S history, 540 Literature (terrible, I know)
Activities (brief list): College Assembly, College Curriculum Task Force, Phi Theta Kappa, WVPH 90.3 FM Station manager, Pathfinders Organization (like boy scouts), High school: Bergen County youth Council for the Homeless: vice president and over 100 hrs logged volunteering, etc.- (other high school activities such as NHS) & work exp as server/busboy

Comments: My SATS/HS stats are going to kill me, my activities compared to you guys just depress me, and my CC background puts me in a disadvantage compared to your elite schools/stats. However, they state they look at all your stats holistically so I just pray that I will kill on the essay’s and hope they find something in me worth admitting to Columbia. That being said, Columbia is my ultimate reach school because of its great core curriculum which in my opinion is the ONLY liberal arts program in the nation and by far, the most balanced. Good luck to all, and feel free to comment on my stats and give me advice or w/e.

hey Amanda617, can you post your stats from last year when you applied to Columbia?

thanks,
Aussie

You even received it before the online track sytem began available (because the track sytem on the websit is not availble yet)?

Solace: I didn’t talk much about the Core in my essays. I probably only mentioned it once. A lot of the transfers I know did, though.

Aussiegbrl: I don’t feel comfortable posting stats, because I don’t think stats really give a good idea of who a person is.

I will say that I had above a 4.0 in high school and near a 4.0 at Middlebury. I scored well on my standardized tests, but not jaw-droppingly. After I was accepted to college, I continued to involve myself in my community during my senior year and organized a big activist event. At Middlebury I became very involved in the campus newspaper and other activist groups. I had a great prof recommendation because I tried to make the most of my academic experience there.

The most important part of your application is you showing that you have made a CONCERTED effort to fit in at your home institution. They want students who legitimately want a full college experience, and have tried, but are missing something crucial that can be given to them at Columbia.

i’m in the middle of writing my columbia essays but i feel so discouraged. columbia is the school i have wanted the most deep down, so i was really devastated when i got WLed. especially because everyone seems to say that it’s impossible for me to ever get in. i don’t like visiting the campus anymore because i get upset at not being a student there and when i see how happy the students are, i feel even worse for not sharing in that happiness. sighs
i just wish i had some help with transferring and all, since i had to fight to get everything sent from my lousy school on time. seriously i’m hoping for a sign in the coming days indicative of my future with columbia >.<

Ok, I’m a transfer student applying for the fall of this year. I attended a community college for the past 2 years and will graduate with an associate’s in engineering science this may. The short answer for columbia asks how and why my current institution isn’t meeting my needs. Well, I’m in a two year college so the reasons are obvious. Should I mention the obvious reasons and add positive things I learned at my school? I’m not completely sure on how to approach the essay. Thanks for the help!!

Right now I’m testing my luck with this school, it would be awesome to get in tho =)

Mentioning the obvious can’t hurt.

what would columbia consider to be quirky personal statement topics? the one i wrote last year was about how my bed was my little island (rated G), but it wasn’t good enough for adcoms apparently.
