Coming off of Waitlist?

Dear Emory Community:

Has anyone come off of the waitlist? We're curious about this, having a waitlist D. Or do they do these things all at once, after May 1, if they need to at all?

i assume that they won't know how many are coming until after may 1st. i wouldn't expect that any would be coming off the list since no one came off last year. you never know though.

If it's any consolation my D was accepted but won't be going so there's at least one place open!!!

Investorscooter,

Good luck to your daughter... I hope she gets off the wait list. The Emory website has this information that might be useful to you (I highlighted a passage that I thought might be of interest). Also, for what it's worth, there were no students taken off the wait list from last year, although it varies from year to year.

Commonly asked questions and answers

Please first review these commonly asked questions. Should you have additional questions about the wait list that are not covered on this page, please feel free to contact us.

How many students are usually taken off the wait list?

Predicting the return on our initial offers of admission is an inexact science. Over the past five years the number of students who have accepted positions on our wait list has averaged from six to seven hundred. The number of students who have been offered admission from the wait list has ranged from none to one hundred.

Is the wait list ranked?

Our wait list is not ranked. If positions in the first-year class become available, the Admission Committee will evaluate wait list candidates on academic and personal qualifications and specific areas of need to round out the first-year class (geographic mix, special talents, etc.)

What can I do to show my interest in being taken off the wait list?

To show your interest in being on our wait list, respond online as directed in your decision letter and provide us with a specific date after which you would no longer be interested in remaining on the wait list.

When is wait list activity concluded?

Wait list activity will be concluded by June 1. Historically, we have called students to offer admission from the wait list as early as late April and have continued through mid-May. Students not offered admission from the wait list will be notified by email or by letter that wait list activity has been concluded.

Is there financial aid available for wait list students?

Emory subscribes to an aid blind admission process, meaning your admission decision is not affected by your need for financial aid. All admitted students, including those students admitted from the wait list, who apply for aid by the appropriate deadline and who demonstrate financial need will receive the available grant, loan, and work-study funds for which they are eligible. Learn more

If I am offered a position in the freshman class, how much time will I have to respond?

A member of the admission staff will call you if you are going to be admitted from the wait list. You will have three days to respond to our offer of admission by submitting a nonrefundable $450 deposit. If you have not previously visited the campus and feel that you must do so prior to enrollment, you will have seven days to visit and finalize your plans.

Also, regarding Boojum's comment, since yield rate suggests that the majority of most accepted students (at most colleges/universities) DECLINE acceptance, the decline by Boojum's daughter is already factored in, and thus it does not hold that one student's decline will translate into an open admission slot.

I'm kinda worried because supposedly we should get periodic e-mails from them and I have yet to hear anything. I accepted my position on the wait-list and since then I haven't gotten an e-mail or anything.

^ if you're the least bit worried, give them a call. Seriously, it never ever hurts to ask!

In my honest opinion, I highly doubt that Emory will go to their waitlist for the '11 incoming class. Last year, I was waitlisted at Wash U, Emory, and Carnegie Mellon, none of which took people off of their waitlists. From what I hear, this is the most competitive year for college admissions, even more so than last year. Id hate to put doubt in any of your hopes, but it is better to get used to the schools you are actually in then to count on getting in your waitlists. Like someone mentioned above, call their office. I had already sent in another essay and an additional teacher's recommendation before I called the admissions office to hear that they were not going to the wait list at all.

Daughter got a wonderful email, complete with someone who was pulled in off waitlist, trying to keep her hopes alive at Emory. She's put her deposit in at W&M and I am hoping if anyone calls her off a waitlist, she'll decline.

hey boojum,

just b/c your D doesn't accept a spot at emory doen't mean that there is a spot open....you think that all the spots that are left open by people who do not matriculate are left to waitlisters? How does that explain no one getting off the WL last year? Emory prepares for about a 30% matriculation...if it is less than that they will accept a few people...honestly WL chances for anybody at a school like emory are slim to none, considering the percentage accepted off the WL in recent years

Has anyone heard that Emory may turn to the wait list, since their yield is low compared to last year and the number of acceptances was reduced, due to last year's large class?

i haven't heard that. i also don't think that anyone can report the yeild rate since the deadline hasn't passed for the accepted people to decide if they are coming. wait it out but don't be too optomistic.

my friend got off of the waitlist today

wait, paulus89, iare you serious?
i got an email telling me about the waitlist today but not getting me off.

well, if it's true, this is good news they're using the waitlist. now let's just hope we get off.

Daughter got three emails from waitlist department today...all stating they wouldn't make any waitlist decisions for a few more days, at least. And should wrap up the waitlist by June 1st

I just got a call about 10 minutes ago, i got accepted from the waitlist.

congratulations, darkseroman.

mind if i ask what your stats are darkseroman?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profiles/member_stat_view.html?user_id=71882
I didn't really care to list all my extracurriculars, not anything major more, but there are some more.

My stats are pretty ****ty(I know), I wasn't truly expecting to getting off the wait list.
My GPA SUXXORS! I slacked off in school for a while, but I am in International Baccalaureate so that maybe helped.

I think my ACT was more appealing:
36 Science (27 first time)
35 Math
33 Reading (32 first time)
30 English (second time 29)
basically 31 -> 33.

Congrats, darkzeroman. Did you already send in one deposit now loose it to send in one to Emory?

yup.
i had thrown down 800 for GT (deposit and housing). but i think i can get about half of that back.

I'm not 100% sure that I'm going to Emory, I just need a few days to look over my options.
