My D has had 2 friends at Milliken. One is a freshman in MT and loves it there. The other left after her freshman year. We were told that the school has a "cut" program whereby many are accepted but it doesn't guarantee you a spot in the program each year. Not sure if this is still true or if that policy is for freshman year only.

Many schools have hurdles/juries/benchmarks that students must pass throughout their years in a MT program. Some schools do have cuts at the end of freshman year, such as they take 40 freshmen but keep only 20 sophomores...My understanding is that Millikin does not do this. From what I have been told, they do not reduce their numbers to get rid of anyone or cut down the size of the class. All first year students hurdle at the end of freshman year (singing, dancing, acting). If you are weak in one or more areas, there are ways to improve and continue. Or they may feel that you would do better in another area (acting rather than MT, for example). It is up to the student to work and make sure their talents and skills grow over the entire year. I think this would be true at many other places as well.

Millikin

That's the way I understand Millikin's system as well.

Rejected to Hartt...three to go for my D. Her first choice - Emerson - is still looming out there. But she did receive an acceptance to regular A&S at U of Hartford and the people were very nice. Does anyone know if regular BAs have any opportunities to take classes at Hartt? I'm asking the school tomorrow - but any feedback would be appreciated.

Karen - big hug!!! Sorry you got the bad news. I read on Facebook that someone called Emerson and they said they mailed all the letters YESTERDAY.

My D just shared a quote with me "Everything will be ok in the end - if it's not ok - it's not the end yet" .....author unknown

Oh, now that's one I'm going to remember!

UCLA and UCI are no go. Assuming CMU is out since no call. Only three left. NYU, Webster and Emerson. So far only D's safety school came through. Cal State Fullerton.

I add my hugs for those receiving bad news.

MOP, I'm going to use that one!

I feel your anxiety. My S just received and email from Syracuse. He is WAIT LISTED!!! It is hard enough to audition in January and learn that your favorite won't let you know until May 15. He does have one MT acceptance, but that does not matter today, he wanted SU. We are still waiting on Emerson and CMU, you never know.

G Beach, being waitlist is not, of course, as good as being accepted. But it is far and away better than being rejected. It means that they believe his talent level is such that they would have accepted him if they had the room. And he may just get off that waitlist, too .... make sure SU knows that they are his first choice and he wants to go there. It's a great school and a great program, even though it's too cold there. :) (I am kidding ... I grew up in a 'burb of Syracuse, so I am allowed to mention the weather.)

Two more rejections for my D. NYU and BoCo. BoCo didn't even have her correct high school information and recommendations. They had assigned someone else's transcripts and recommendations to her. I have heard there is another girl auditioning with the exact same name, oh well, at this point doesn't really matter. Emerson is still out there.

My d got a rejection from Hartt today. She's ok. It's good to know one way or another.

Karen - that is just shocking. Did you tell them to go back and reevaluate her based on her records?

karent, that IS crazy! I read something similar on the Parent Forum thread about a girl who did not get into U of Maryland with a 4.0 GPA, 9 APs and a really high SAT. Turns out the guidance counselor called the girl a "he" in recommendations and said things like "He likes watching other people do improtant things." Inexplicable! I am so sorry this happened to your D.

Its kind of comical now the luck we have had with admissions offices. It really
highlights the fact that you need to check your application status. We were so busy with the auditions that we overlooked the administrative side.

If anyone applied to BoCo and went to E C Glass high school and had recommenders Albon and Miller, my D was assigned your transcripts and your recommenders in addition to her own.

Even with two transcripts and 5 recommenders she still couldn't get in.

Sorry CAST MOM - I know how you feel. My D started crying on the train today when I told her we got the NYU rejection. We shouldn't have applied to so many schools, especially with her grades not really being strong enough to compete at some of the higher level schools - but we did get some general BA acceptances out of it - so not a total loss - just not MT.

Rejected from BoCo, Syracuse, and BU (for acting). 3 more schools to hear from...but if the trend continues, I'm not going to be hearing anything good. I'm trying really hard to be positive, but basically, I'm more depressed than I've ever been in my life.

BohemaKJ: So sorry to hear about your news from the 3 schools. Please don't give up hope yet as hard as it may seem. You still have 3 schools left and it only takes ONE!! I believe that every student who gives this a try and puts themselves out there like this is a major winner and obviously strong talent. Only a really special individual has the courage and drive to try! As many have written before me, there are many ways to achieve your dream even if you have to take a different path.

Hang in -- you are still in the race!! I wish you all the best and hope you receive good news shortly!!

NMR- Your post about referring to a female candidate as "he" really hits home with me. My D has a family name; she is named for my mother but it is a man's name. And it happens to also belong to a famous male athlete. The reactions she gets when she meets people is comical. But is ceases to be funny when admissions keeps insisting my she is a he.

I am so happy for your D's great news and all her options. Congratulations, and thanks for being such a nice person on CC.

Mesmom - my sister got assigned to a boys' cabin when she went off to camp, and (giving away age here!) she was "invited" to register for Selective Service when she turned 18.

Found out a few days ago that I got rejected from UC Irvine. It turns out they rejected me because I got into three other UC's that are harder to get into then UC Irvine (UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Davis), so the admissions office figured I would choose those schools over Irvine anyway (little do they know about MT). Of course the other UC's don't have MT AT ALL and I would have chosen UCI over them in a heartbeat! :/

I'm going to appeal the decision. Why do schools do that? :(
