Common App and Teacher Recs. Confused....

Hey guys. I am going to be applying to college soon. And I have several questions and confusions that need edification.

First, I want to give my version of what I think the overall process is. Then you guys can comment on it.

I am applying to 10-12 schools.

Most of them are on the common application online. So I made an account and filled out most of the information like name, date of birth, courses, etc....

Soon I need to write the "essay" on the main application. Plus I am taking the SAT for the second time in October, so those scores need to be put on there by the end of Oct when scores are reported.

So I need to complete all the supplements and those additional essays online, finalize everything, and send it electronically to the colleges right?

The colleges that dont have common application....I have to go to their website and fill those out electronically right?

My main question is..how do I send in the teacher recommendations? Do I just print 24 copies of the rec. form (12 colleges, 2 teachers) and give 12 to each teacher with stamped envelopes? Can someone describe to me this process?

Also the secondary school report form has a place for counselor recommendation. Do I need 12 of those forms and their respective envelopes or do the teacher recs and the couselor rec/transcript all go in one envelope?

bump
.

lol @ the idea of a teacher filling out 12 separate recommendations.

Your GC will take care of it. Print out one common app form and give it to each teacher for the common app schools. They will probably (though not 100%) give it to your GC after they are finished, and she will xerox however many copies are necessary according to the amount of schools you're applying to.

This is how we did it in my house and what I recommend to my students:

Give each teacher one copy of the recommendation. They will fill it out and make copies (instead of them having to write the information 12 times). In this age of computers/word processing, they wil write one recommendation and print 12 copies (either making adjustments for each school or writing 1 generic rec about you). I would also suggest that you give each recommender a brag sheet about you so that they can more personalize your letter. Gently remind them of the date that the school needs the recommendations by.

Give each teacher 12 stamped envelopes addressed to each school. You can use the school as the return address. My recommendation is to go to the post office an purchase 24 stamped postcards. Address each post card to your home address. on the other side of the card put the following

Name of College
Received by
Date Rec'd
In the corner you can make a note: teacher rec and the initials of the teacher.

The colleges will mail back the post cards and you will have a record of which college has received what information (you can do this for your GC recs also)

Also send thank you notes to your recommenders.
