Common app confusion. Help please?

Ok this is a common question, but i can not seem to find any direct answers to my question as I peruse these forums and google.

I plan to approach the why common app essay by tailoring it specifically to one school and making multiple accounts to make multiple essays and making them specific to other schools.

however for cornell, it's supplement asks why cornell basically. So two essays on the same topic isn't very potent.

same problem with emory. what should I do?

the cornell essays look the same at first glance, but they’re completely different.

the commonapp one is asking you why you want to transfer, so focus on what cornell can offer you and how you’ll add to cornell’s community.

the supplement’s prompt is basically asking you for a story. tell them what experience made you interested in your prospective major and give them details about what you felt and why you developed your passion for it. then tell them what makes cornell’s program the only place for you to pursue your interests to the fullest.

ahh i see what you mean ironically unsure! thank you for clearing them up! however, the supplement does ask how cornell could help further your interests so wouldn’t that require me to repeat what i wrote earlier?

also, for schools such as emory, the supplement is exactly “why emory?” almost word for word, do you have any advice as to how I would tackle that?

CA main essay: Generalities about why your current school isn’t working, why you need to move to accomplish your goals, etc.

Why Emory: Specific reasons why E would suit you better, how E would help you to accomplish your objectives, what you would bring to E, etc.

P.S., you don’t make multiple accounts, just multiple versions of your CA.

^^ right, so do what i said for cornell for emory. there’s always going to be some overlap, but the more you can show you know about the school and what you like about it and what you’ll bring to the community, etc is always better. my supplement was just under the word limit and only talked about my major and then my CA essay was 2 pages (pretty long, but i thought everything worked well) of tons of details relating back to my goals, major, and what i just liked about the school

thank you both for your responses.

However, I heard that “bashing” your school is not a food approach. Is this not true? if it is true i dont really have anything bad to say about nyu.

however, Cornell is everything i ever dreamed off and has exactly what i want. it boasts a super low teacher student, the major requirements are all classes i would love to take, its in ithaca- - an sort of isolated area which would help me focus more on my studies, it is a large school, has a lot of diversity, etc.

NYU doesnt have all of that but is still in good in other aspects.

i truly want to go to Cornell because of what it offers and not why NYU cant compare

thanks in advance for the reply, much apologies if i sound stubborn i just want to work out all the kinks so i dont end up screwing up both essays.

They are not the same. The essay prompts are different, although they overlap somewhat.

The supplement essay is about how your got to choose your intended major and about what interests you academically and why.

The main essay is a general transfer essay most people use to tell their stories and to explain why they want to transfer.

And yes, bashing anyone is not a good idea. You have to be positive about the school you attend.

You can frame your essay the other way. Instead of saying “my school is bad because…” say “I’m looking for a school that is good because…[it is “not bad”].” Does that make sense?

Stating why your school isn’t working is not equivalent to bashing your school. Other than CC students, ALL transfers have a reason why their current school isn’t adequate in meeting their needs, otherwise they wouldn’t be applying to transfer.
