Hi,
I am having trouble deciding whether I should put down German and French as proficient languages on the Common app. For German, I have not been studying it for a long time, but I did an exchange in Germany for a month and am taking the DSD 1 test in the spring (proficiency test given by the German government in order to study in certain schools there), and I have done exceedingly well on the practice tests. I also can talk comfortably with my German teachers on most topics, and I continuously watch German videos on youtube (I try to watch a variety of stuff, such as news reports, German gamers, even beauty gurus and vloggers, etc, and I can understand around 85% of what is being said). However, I am not a native speaker, and I do not want to not claim something that I am not on the forms.
For French, I continuously read and watch French news in order to gain fluency but have yet to take an actual standardized test in the language, and can understand around 70% of what is being said. Therefore I do not know where I stand in this language. I took 3 years of French in high school, but it is because I skipped a year and advanced forward. I know that high school languages courses are definitely not enough to put down proficiency, but I try take as much initiative as possible with these languages, and study by myself.
Is there any advantage to putting down multiple languages? I already hinted at my love of languages in my main essay and supplementals.
