Common App Recommendations

Your link is broken...

Sorry about that! I tried the link just now, and it said my session was timed out.

Anyone can go in and find it on their own, and maybe someone can post a better link, hopefully. (It's in the FAQs.)

Ah, I just needed to log into the common app for it to work. The foreign URL confused me.

That's not good news, as one of my teachers like Online and the other likes paper...

Has the recommendation stuff been figured out? I still only see invite options, with or without teachers invited.

One of my teacher prefers electronic, but my counselor prefers paper. Since my counselor has to go with school policy, I guess I'll have to ask my teachers to submit them by paper. The thing is: I can't find the counselor evaluation via paper except a blank one with no ID (I'm applying to Stanford, and apparently you have to have the ID number on it and you can't write it yourself).

... Help? I mean, I still have plenty of time, but my high school class is huge and I don't want to overload teachers and counselors as application deadlines loom around the corner.

I called Rice University and University of Notre Dame and the admissions officers said that it is perfectly alright if you just write your Common App. # at the bottom of the sheet.

someone should call Stanford to make sure it is alright to write the ID in pen...then come back here and let us know what's acceptable...I would myself but I won't be home after school tomorrow...thanks in advance if someone clears this up...

log in
go to school forms
invite
press teacher/counselor
WHEN FILLING IN INFO, DO NOT, DO NOT put an e-mail address
the process will automatically become offline
the pdf files will be available for download
enjoy and good luck!

I emailed common app and they told me that all school forms MUST be online this year...I am SO confused, since schools seem to still accept paper forms.

So are we still able to give teachers our recs offline and mailing them to each school?

azn4eyes, when i tried that, nothing showed up...do i fill everything out but the email address and then hit save...will they show up then?

yes, you hit save

(doesnt even matter if you hit save and you messed up or you're not sure its the teacher you want anyway, you can delete them even after you add them)

Ah thanks for the help -- follow azn's post if you guys' school only has the invite option (like mine)

wait. =[ I just realized after doing this, I got the 2007-2008 Teacher Rec.

Uh oh. Anyone want to help?

This seems to be a common issue this year (with myself as well), so I did some digging around the common app websites, and based from the info I gathered from there as well as around the forums, here my my conclusions:

[ol]
[]Applicants can still use the online common app application with paper-based school forms.
[]Most of us get the invitation form to school officials, and if you put in your teachers' emails addresses, they get emails telling them to do one of two things:
[]They can choose to submit the forms online
[]They can choose to opt-out of the online forms and print and fill in the paper ones instead.[/ol]
[]Whether or not the teacher chooses paper or online is independent of any other teacher's decision.
[]If a teacher decides to opt-out of the online forms, s/he will have to use the paper methods for ALL the applicants s/he is writing for.
Some people have said common app mandates that we either do all paper/online and not mix and match. This is dissonant to the instructions found here[/url</a>] and here[/url</a>], which both state that the All Online / All Paper concept only applies to the counselor/teacher when filling in the school forms.

Some have also said that colleges are still accepting the teacher recs by paper and the application online, and I'm inclined to believe them.

Do correct me if I'm wrong. Hopefully this clears things up

Sorry if this is already answered here/in other threads but:

How many teachers can we invite to common application; 2 is required, but can we get more?

Do they have to use the common application format, or can they just write a traditional letter

Is everything done electronically?

Where can i find the form/section on the common app for the additional rec.

I don't see the invite option for teachers/counselor, where is it?

So let's say, for example, that I am applying to 10 colleges (that use Common App). Does this mean that I essentially have to print out 10 copies of the Teacher Evaluation form for one teacher, 10 copies for my 2nd teacher, and 10 copies of the Secondary School Report for my guidance counselor (all in each of their own addressed/stamped envelopes)?

And, what exactly do I write on the outside of each of these envelopes?

blue:
1. i believe you can invite more. do try and let us know
2. As mentioned, when you invite them, the teacher has a choice of either filling it online, or opting out to do the paper forms, but that's up to them.
3. Everything else can be done electronically (unless otherwise stipulated by the college)
4. If I am correct, there's a place for you to upload additional documents. However, if you would like your additional rec (i'm assuming not from a teacher, otherwsie just use the teacher invite form), to be sent without your seeing it, I think the only way is via hardcopy. Do check with the colleges regarding their views on additional recs.

fhg: under the 'School Forms' section

kMz:Yes, that is write, assuming they choose to opt out of the online forms. Alternatively, you can ask them to fill in one copy and photocopy that. Schools have mentioned that doing so is fine.

And erm, write the address of the school?

Besides the school's address, is there anything else we should include, such as the contents of the envelope? If so, how would we indicate that and where? And also, do I put MY name and address for the return address, or my TEACHER'S name and address?

Stanford has some mailing lables where they put in addition to the address,
the contents of the envelope, and
whether you're applying for early/regular

I suppose there's really no rule to what you can't put, especially if it helps their filing. You might probably want to put your official name, particularly if your name can be written in a number of ways

As for the teachers recs, my school advised us to put the schools address as the return address for obvious reasons.

Common App ID not on downloadable forms

The Common App ID will not appear on paper forms retrieved from the "Downloadable Forms" section of the Common App website. However, the schools will still accept the school forms.
