Community college counsoler says I dont have a chance, UC website contradicts. Help! D:

Hey there,

When I went to my college counselor this week, she told me that I cannot possibly transfer for the fall of 2016 because I am missing my language and speech classes and refused to talk about it further.

When I went home and looked at the actual requirements for my major at UC Davis, it says I meet all my requirements. I’m a bit confused, and nervous that I may have messed something up. I really don’t think I can do another year at CC, its so demoralizing.

I will call my transfer campuses, but I’m curious as to what CC thinks.

Heres what courses I have/will take by my transfer date: imgur. com/GwZ3xv1

Those polisci courses were dual enrollment in High School.

Heres where I am applying and my intended major:

1.)UCDavis - NeuroBio

2.) UC Irvine - Biology

3.) UCSD - Molecular Biology

4.) UCSB - Biology

5.) [STRECH SCHOOLS] UCLA and UCB - Biology

6.) Cal Poly - Biology

Thanks a ton guys, I’ve done the research but I would really love a third opinion.

She could be referring to your current schools graduation requirements. Are you trying to obtain an A.A. before transferring?

^No, just units for transfer, and I made it abundantly clear.

CC’s publish their completion rates just like 4 year schools do. And the rates are abysmal. But that is partially because many students start CC with no intention of completing 2 years there. The fact that students leave for 4 year schools is not a failure at all of the CC. But the way the data is displayed makes it look that way. This counselor may be trying to encourage more students to stay for the AA. Your best bet is to talk to someone at UC.

What does http://assist.org say? Generally you don’t need a speech class for UCs, only for CSUs including Cal Poly. You need to meet prereqs and if stated in Assist, IGETC completed for a minimum total of 60 semester/90 quarter units completed by Spring 2016.

As for foreign language, you can satisfy IGETC with 2 years of high school language with C- or better. To use this for IGETC, you must send your high school transcripts to your CC.

Read and post here for more help http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/

ETA: you may also satisfy partial IGETC or a UC’s breadth instead.

Will you have the second organic chemistry course?

UCs do not require the speech course. However, check with UCD as to whether the foreign language requirement (or IGETC) must be satisfied before transfer.

Great question for the UC transfer forum or even the Calif schools forum.
