Community college student and prospective 2013 transfer with some questions

I've got about another year, but I'd like to think that the worst is behind me (have about 40 credits from my community college so far, taking credit for only one of my three AP test scores).

I took an online calculus course through my community college last semester, which, I understand, was a big mistake for several reasons, one of them being that Rutgers doesn't take credit for online math courses. I regret it, but I was eager at the time to get a certain two computer science courses out of the way. I'm okay with retaking the course somewhere down the line, but I've got to press on ahead to Calculus II (not online, of course) and then Linear Algebra to get my associate's degree on time. My question is, how would that work? Would I still be able to take the courses at Rutgers for which Calculus I is a prerequisite? Would I be required to retake the course at Rutgers immediately, or could I do it redo it at my community college over a summer? (I'd do it now, but it's a bit late.)

Sorry if that's a dumb question, but here is another one. I'm afraid I already know the answer, but it's worth a try: can people who didn't qualify for NJ Stars qualify for NJ Stars II? I've only read that the latter is for NJ Stars beneficiaries who maintain a 3.25 in community college, but I don't see the logic behind that, so I'm just seeking confirmation that I shouldn't expect to get any merit aid from NJ Stars II when I transfer with a 3.8-3.9 GPA (which I'm pretty sure is what I'll have by the time I'm done here) and a handful of honors courses on my transcript (not that that makes a difference, but just saying). I didn't qualify for the first NJ Stars; just screwed up too many times in high school, /sadface

I think I have more to ask, but those are my most pressing concerns at the moment.

You are not going to be able to take a course at rutgers that require calculus I as a prerequisites if they don’t accept Your online calculus credit which I highly doubt they will. My advice is to finish everything that will get you your associate degree(transfer process will be much smoother with it).

I have no clue about NJ stars but if you are graduating with an AA or AS from a nj cc then you will qualify for the PTK scholarship(if you are a member) that will grant 8k/ year for your next 2 yrs at rutgers. The min gpa is 3.8

How will getting the associate’s degree make the process smoother? I’m definitely going to do it anyway, but I’m curious. Will I not have to worry about the online Calc 1 credits transferring if I get my associate’s?

Also, graduating with my 3.8+ and my A.S. while being in PTK will make me eligible to be considered for the scholarship, but only 25 people can get it, so my odds seem kinda slim. Does Rutgers get a lot of transfer students?

When you come for orientation you will be separated according to the number of credits and if you are coming with an associate degree or not. I came with an associate degree in chemistry and literally only took 3 humanities and 1 english classes at cc but they waived the remaining gen Ed courses I needed to complete for my bio degree at rutgers.

Again I don’t think your calc 1 class will transfer. Check NJ transfer to confirm. Anything that says non transferable will NOT transfer.

As far as scholarship. You still have a few semesters left to bring up your GPA. Believe me even there are lots of transfer students each semester, not all actually have the min. GPA or even aware of the scholarship and PTK.

I got the scholarship when I transferred this semester

I’m not sure about how your CC does it, but I go to another NJ CC and how it works is yes Rutgers wants you to take classes that meet at least once a week for longer than 5 weeks I think. But on my transcript there is no difference that says that it was an online class or a class that mets 3 times a week for 15 weeks. Hope that helps, go ask an Advisor how your transcripts work they’ll know if its that way.

Firefighter is correct. Nj transfer also specified that calc 1&2 classes must be met for at least 8 weeks on campus( at least for my cc as well)

I meant to say 5 weeks

The possibility that I might not be exempt from the general ed. requirements for having an associate’s degree is really starting to worry me. I’ve been required to take a bunch of classes for my A.S. that won’t fulfill any part of the Core Curriculum, which the SAS website says every transfer from Fall 2012 onward is required to do; I kinda thought all this time that I was fulfilling requirements and not just accumulating random credits.

I’ll have to take 3 - 6 extra general ed. classes, and it doesn’t look like there are many classes at my school that I can take to get started. There’s an Intercultural Communications class that runs at a very convenient time for me that I might be able to use to fulfill both the “Discipline-Based Writing and Communication” and the “Nature of Languages” requirements, but [NJ Transfer says this.](<a href=“NJ Transfer: Equivalency Look-Up Result”>NJ Transfer: Equivalency Look-Up Result) I’m not really sure how to read that. Can I still take the class for the general ed. requirements, or is Rutgers only accepting it as a communications and media studies elective now?

NJ Transfer is also saying that two ([1, 2](<a href=“NJ Transfer: Equivalency Look-Up Result”>NJ Transfer: Equivalency Look-Up Result)) of the three CS classes my CC requires for CS majors will only transfer as electives, which is really confusing to me, because I was told the curriculum was designed to be transferable.

They will follow whatever is said on NJ transfer.
