Is it a bad idea to try to transfer to a 4 year school after one year at a community college and when should I start applying

After only one year, they’ll look at both highschool and college transcripts. So if your high school grades weren’t that good, you wouldn’t want to.

Either way, apply by the deadline of the schools you’re hoping to attend.

my highschool grades weren’t bad and if I do very well at a community college should i go through with it

All schools are different, for example: You can apply for transfer to USC whenever you want but they look at your high school grades only if you have less than 30 units (which you should since 30 units is more or less 1 year). So if you have 30+ units they disregard your high school grades completely. I say go for it, it is what I am planning to do as well. Just be sure to keep your grades up and join the honors program, participate in a sport, join a club etc.

Talk with the transfer counselor at the community college about this. That person is your best resource for handling the transfer process. Our local CC has a special program designed for students who do intend to transfer after one year. If yours doesn’t, you could use this to help plan which gen eds to take care of that first year: [Transfer Studies Certificate](http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/EDU/Plain.aspx?id=13298)
