Community Supplement

For the prompt: "Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it."
Do you think it would be bad to talk about being a Christian? I'm not really religious or anything, it just so happens that a lot of my volunteer work and activities are part of the church. It isn't a really original community to choose either, which is why I was worried.

SeniorYear1…Why would you choose to write an essay about a community that you, by your own admission, are not a member of? Being a Christian involves a lot more than volunteering time and participating in activities at a church. Those are wonderful endeavors and you should be commended for them, but I’d suggest choosing a different community as the topic for your essay. You run the risk of potentially alienating and/or offending an admissions officer who is a Christian.

if an admissions officer purposely refuses you because that is what you right then damn religion even more than I thought.

It depends on what college you are joining I think. If you are in LSAm then you might wanna take some time and think about what you are gonna write. If you are applying to CoE, no one cares what you write in the essays.

@Wolverine86 My apologies, I did not mean to offend. What I mean to say is that I am a strong Christian and I do enjoy being a part of the Christian community, however I’ve heard from others that it can be seen negatively. But I definitely agree, MLDWoody.
Sorry, I should’ve rephrased the whole “I’m not really religious or anything, it just so happens that a lot of my volunteer work and activities are part of the church” thing. My bad.

Senior…No offense taken. I just thought you might be better off writing about something that you’re passionate about. If being a Christian fits that bill, then by all means write about it. As MLDWoody said, no admissions officer should let the basis of your essay sway their opinion. Only the content should be a factor. As to whether or not they read it, who knows? But in any case, never be reluctant to share who you are with others. For those who might not like it, I think that says more about them than it does about you. Good Luck!!

but like I said, if you are applying for CoE don’t stress about it… I copy and pasted the same essay 6 times… and switched the Michigan’s to Purdue’s or the Wolverines to Buckeyes

Thanks for the feedback!
