Compare Holy Cross, Muhlenberg and Cornell

Muhlenberg has given a very generous FA package, Holy Cross an average FA package and Cornell a small FA package. Major would be chemistry or bio pre-med. Have visited all and the plus with Muhlenberg besides the package and small size is an athletic component. Thoughts on quality in general between the three?

Muhlenberg is ranked 71 and HC is 35th on liberal arts rankings for US News.

Princeton Review Academic rating for Muhlenberg is 87 98 for HC and 89 for Cornell.

^^^^
That’s not correct–if Triscuit is asking about Cornell University. Cornell University’s academic rating in Princeton Review is 92. You looked up Cornell College’s academic rating instead of Cornell University.

Triscuit, if you meant Cornell College in Iowa and not Cornell University, or vice versa, you need to be careful and state whether it’s “College” or “University.” YOu can’t just say “Cornell.”

Also, Muhlenberg’s academic rating is 89 not 87

If you click on the link I provided above it clearly states Cornell University and it shows:

Key Statistics

Academics & Majors
Academic Rating:89
Academic Calendar:Semester
Student Faculty Ratio:9:1
Total Faculty:1896

Ok, Thanks, I did mean Cornell University. I did not know there was a Cornell College in Iowa. Right now it is down to Muhlenberg and Cornell University. I know they are very different, but it seems Cornell might have more opportunities in research, and more selections of majors, should that decide to change. The generous package from Muhlenberg is very inticing, as is the small size, but the options available at Cornell are also very inticing. We are visiting both again this week before final decisions are made.

Sorry, 1980Collegegrad, but I’ve got a hardcopy of the Princeton Review, right here in my lap. It says 89 for Cornell College and 92 for Cornell University.

I’ve got the 2007 edition of PR right here in my lap and it says Cornell University’s academic rating was only 91. Looks like academics are improving at Cornell (U that is).

All of us can go to [Test Prep: GMAT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, SAT, ACT, and More](http://www.princetonreview.com) right now and verify that the numbers I provided are what is currently available on-line. You may have outdated hardcopies. The very latest is on the Internet at their website. Go to Find a College, search for the school in question, and then click on Academics and you will see the Academic Rating under “Key Statistics”.

^^^

Hmmm…no academic rating under “key statistics.” They give some stats in that column but to get more you have to register. I don’t have time for that, not when I already have the Princeton Review hardcopy.

Even if it is there it has to be a typo. How can Hundsonvalley51’s 2007 guide say “91” and the 2008 guide in my lap say “92” and 2009 is a drop of 3 points to “89?” No way. I think some of the online information is from 2006. It’s in need of updating.

It takes only 10 seconds to register and it cleary states that it is the 2009 edition. Why would they have the 2006 version on the Internet? But I am sure you would rather not know the truth. You can’t handle the truth.

Hi triscuit - congrats on such nice choices, but Muhlenberg vs Cornell are SO very different. My D is a senior at 'berg, and S considered Cornell three years ago when he was searching. I spent a lovely four days in the summer in Ithaca.

So it sounds like your D has the decision whether to be a big fish in a small pond, or opt for the more prestigious Ivy League choice.

I know other applicants who were in a similar situation in years past, and the fin aid package (knowing that Med School was ahead) was very enticing.

If your D can play a sport at Muhlenberg and be a top graduate, she will have doors open for her, which might not be there at Cornell. She will be visible, at 'berg, offered research opportunities.
Cornell, has Ithaca, and is very well respected. The competitive aspeact of Cornell, ultimately turned our son off, and all is going well where he ended up. So how will your D do in large intro classes designed to weed out students ASAP?

Interesting choices… (sorry can’t help factor in Holy Cross)
