I come from a VERY competetive high school (Walt Whitman). The average SAT (old) is a 1234. I have a 3.09 unweighted GPA, 3.44 weighted, and will probably get around a 1950 on the new SAT. I have quite a rigorous schedule (before the end of high school I will have taken 10 Honors and 4 AP courses). Because of my course load/the competetiveness of my school, my class rank is only around 50%. What are my chances at-
-Penn State University Park (Really want to attend)
-University of Pittsburgh (Sort of to attend)
-University of Delaware (Don't really want to attend)
-James Madison University (Want to attend)
-Auburn University (Really want to attend)
-University of Arizona (First choice)
-University of Iowa (Sort of want to attend)
-University of Georgia (Really want to attend)
-University of Maryland College Park (Don't want to attend at all, but my mom is making me apply)
Please rate my chances at each (give an estimated percentage chance of acceptance if you can). I am open to suggestions for other schools.

you gpa and rank is a bit low for the colleges you want to attend to.

Which ones?

If you don't want to go to the U of Delaware, don't apply. It leaves with less time to focus on the apps that matter to you.

Yeah, but I should probably apply to 8 schools. Some of the schools I am applying to (like Arizona and Auburn) have REALLY easy apps.

i am talking about the schools you REALLY want to attend.

Hmmm... I dunno. I have heard Auburn and Arizona are safeties.

Anyone else have comments?

Please respond.

dude if there is anything i can tell you today, its this:
1. i think your chances look good for all the colleges you want to attend
2. if you dont want to attend maryland, dont apply. dont let your mother waste valuable app time you could be using to apply to places you actually want to go. its your education, your life; not hers.

Good thing my school doesn't rank. 10% go to HYP, so I assume thats mostly the top 10% of the class. Maybe you should ask your counselor to see where past students have gone in (with similar stats to yours). Goodl uck.

I would not say that is VERY competetive, but competetive nonetheless. My brother's school has an avg. SAT over 1450.

I forgot to mention; it is a public school. 1234 for a public school is REALLY high, possibly the highest in the country

Your chances at Penn State are iffy-- Most of the kids from my high school ( around the corner from yours) who had below a 3.3 unweighted GPA did not get in this year. Same with James Madison. It was crazy how many people did not get in with decent grades and SAT's . Same with Maryland. Most of the people I know got deferred, or waitlisted for the Fall but admitted to attend int he Spring. You better hope your SAT's are totally awesome cuz from my experience this year, your gpa isn't going to cut it for those schools.

Where do you go? The average accepted GPA accepted to Penn State from my school was a 3.4, and the average SAT was a 1256. 91/132 kids who applied were accepted.

Back up to the top!

I'm a senior who was in a very similar situation this year. (Only with slightly worse grades/class rank, but better test scores.) I was accepted to one top 30 LAC and waitlisted at another. I've also been accepted to at least one public that's comparable to several of the ones you want to go to. So my advice would be to keep your hopes realistic, but definetly don't be afraid to reach high because you never know. And an upward trend, if you have one, can help to somewhat offset a bad GPA. (A dean of admissions at the LAC I was accepted to wrote a note at the bottom of my acceptance that said as much.) So good luck to you.

Nope, I have a strong downward trend. Looks like I'm screwed unless I fix it next year.

I just visited UMD today. The campus seems alright, but literally EVERYONE there is a minority. I really don't like the student body. I don't mean to sound racist, but I would rather have a community that I can mesh with. A lot of the students there seem uneducated, or are just the biggest stereotypes I have ever seen.

I am going to JMU today. I will let you guys know what I think.
