Completed 2yr @ SCCC, attended SJC and flunked 1st semester, want to transfer to SBU

Hey, this is my first post on CC, so apologies if this isn’t the place to post this. Here’s my story:

I started college at Suffolk County Community College almost as soon as I graduated high school. I went down the Criminal Justice track and did relatively well, I graduated with an AS in Criminal Justice w/ a 3.4 GPA and made Dean’s List in 2017. While Stony Brook was initially on my radar, they didn’t have my major and so I searched elsewhere. I have just finished my 1st semester at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue… it didn’t go so well. I got two Cs, one B, and an F! My record at Suffolk should show that this probably isn’t the norm, I was going through some personal problems and on top of that my councilor there told me I wasn’t allowed to pick my professors in the first semester (No RateMyProfessors!) and picked them for me, and they weren’t all that great and left a bad taste in my mouth about the college in general. As a result, my GPA is dead on arrival there, and I actually changed my major while there anyways, one that SBU offers… is it too late? Do I need to spend another semester at St. Joe’s to fix my grades before I should apply for transfer or should I just tell them that this was a fluke and beg for a second chance based on my community college grades?

TL;DR, I got my associate’s degree at Suffolk with a good GPA & Dean’s List, but I failed my first and only semester at St. Joe’s right after. Would Stony Brook be willing to overlook my recent bad grades and transfer me based on my performance at Suffolk?

Generally, no. Of course , you should try to get an interview with Admissions at SB and ask. My guess is that it would be recommended to show a semester of good grades before being accepted. The last thing you do is what is scrutinized

Can you commute to SB? Or to another SUNY? Taking a semester of good solid academic courses as a non matriculating student might be a good idea And get good grades that term. A lot of schools, including our local SUNY does allow just about anyone to take courses on a non matriculating basis.

I live about 10 minutes driving distance from Stony Brook, I was looking into commuting there from the start. I’m sad to hear my chances aren’t in my favor, as I really don’t have as much money as I thought for St. Joe’s, whereas Stony Brook was a much cheaper option for me. I will talk to Admissions and see if they’ll hear me out though.

Can you afford to pay for a semester of courses at SB as an in matriculating student? You cannot loans or Aid on that basis. Have to pay out of pocket. You can possibly redeem yourself that way.

Do speak directly to SB Admissions and see what they have to say.
