I've applied to CS in the college on ENG but i know i have a very low chance with a 31C, 34M, 34E, 30S, 25R, however, I was wondering if they look at my second choice which is CS in LAS. I heard they dont mind the second choice and just reject students?

I am out of state btw. Was just wondering if my second choice of CS in LAS would be looked at after rejection to the ENG college (if that happens).

** I heard they dont mind the second choice and just reject students? **

Your 2nd choice is looked at with the same consideration as those who apply to it as their first choice.

Just because you have a 31 ACT does not mean you have a very low chance. That may be the bottom 25%, but if you other parts of your application (GPA, class rank, EC’s, etc.) can make up for it.

Do they see your second-choice major while reading your application for the first-choice major?

It is not hidden from them. If you’re asking whether they take it into account then the answer is IDK, and I wouldn’t expect anyone on staff to admit to using the info in making the initial decision.

I got in to engineering CS last year with a 32 ACT. Test scores aren’t everything. Did have good essays though.
(Instate, female.)

@bookworm5590‌ instate students given highest priority, and being female in CoE is a hook. Test scores mean a lot I would say right now.

Although they ask for them UIUC does not actually consider EC’s and the essays for admission. It is strictly a GPA, SAT, and Class Rank, in/out of state rubric with admission by intended major which must be declared. It is also very difficult to get approval for switching to highly competitive majors once enrolled. I don’t think UIUC can discriminate by gender or ethnicity for US citizens.

@keesh17‌ Where did you hear that? I can’t believe you without a proper source. That does not seem true.

Straight from an admissions person doing the intro speech to our prospective student tour two years ago. He said in some cases they may take a look at the essay but it’s rare.

@keesh17 @nagintapls‌ they aren’t really “essays”, they are more like short response to 3 prompts. I highly doubt they wouldn’t look at them

Exactly. I’m sure they look at them, but they may not have a huge impact on your admissions decision unless your essays directly relate to what you want to do at UIUC.

@nagintapls‌ they do. one prompt asks why you picked the major you picked, and another asks why you chose the second choice major you did.

True. I don’t know what keesh17 is talking about.

I’ll repeat it again - we heard this directly from an admissions person at the school during a tour presentation.

Yes, the website and their literature says they do a holistic admission but the reality is that they (their computer) calculates a score and each major has a acceptance range. Our high school sends about 30 kids to UIUC from about 60 accepted each year out of a class of 225 or so. It is pretty clear that a GPA SAT rubric is used - acceptance is very, very predictable as long as you keep the major in mind.

The reason they have you pick a second major is so that they can offer you that for admission if they still need students at that GPA SAT level.

My own thoughts as to why they don’t do holistic admission; the school is tight on funding and they just don’t have the manpower to spend much time on each application. UIUC admitted 600 freshmen mainland Chinese students this year - they cannot attach value to their essays since most/many of them will not have written them themselves and since the school does not require the ACT with writing they don’t have a comparison to check for cheating. Other schools compare the SAT ACT writing against essays.

The SAT GPA calculation is probably the fairest way for them to admit all things considered.

Ok. do you know what their “range” is for CS? I have a 35 ACT and 4.323 GPA. Am I in?

@nagintapls‌ @keesh17 way to steal my thread. and can you chance me then keesh?

For CS and a few of the engineering fields such as Mechanical and BIo Mecahanical a 35 is definitely not a guarantee even with a high GPA. What is your unweighted GPA? Does your HS rank? Are you in state?

In past years the early admission date (Nov 1) was advantageous since admission was more or less “first come first served”. Have you applied already?

3.85
