Concerning the future of IB C163 / MCB C142

As many of you know, MCB pulled support for this course, so the course is canceled. I have seen people ask about it a couple times, so I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread about it

To those of you who already took it, should be able to use it for whatever requirement you use it for.

To those of you who need to still take a genetics course for you major, IB and MCB are each making a new course to make up for this course.

On the IB end, it is IB 164: Human Genetics and Genomics. On the MCB end, nothing is known.

IB majors will be able to use IB 164 for their genetics requirement. On the MCB end, nothing is known, but it is plausible to assume that tracks that were supposed/allowed to take MCB C142 in the past will be able to take the new MCB replacement courses.

For other biology majors, it is plausible that they will allow use of the new courses for their requirement(s), but once again nothing is known. It is also possible that IB majors will be able to take the new MCB course, as we are allowed to take MCB 140 for our genetics requirement.

darn, mcbc142 is gone? i took it last semester… i’m not mcb major but why did mcb pulled support from it?

The IB UG advisers said that MCB wanted an all-MCB (as in not cross-listed) genetics class other than just 140.

The MCB end is now known

MCB 104: Genetics, Genomics and Cell Biology is the replacement for C142. It appears that this course might be offered every semester according to the catalog. IB also accepts it for their requirement.

On a side note, since cell bio is now a part of MCB 104, MCB 130 won’t be offered anymore. From what I was told by the MCB department, MCB 130 will be replaced by another course, which I assume is MCB 130A.

Furthermore, MCB 130L will have additional physiology lab sections starting Spring 2010.

Now we need to wait for MCB to update their Major at a Glance page, and then things will become clearer. The catalog says 130A requires 104.

It appears that Biological Chemistry, Cell & Developmental Biology, Immunology & Pathogenesis, and Neurobiology are all affected, though Neu and CDB are the most affected. Neuro didn’t even require genetics to begin with, I figure now they require it.

ugh, all my planning for nothing.
does anyone know if the staff in the office is updated on all these changes b/c i want to declare and figure out what i need.

Neuro requires MCB 104 (the new genetics course).
MCB 130 and 130L now has a physiology section so MCB 136 is no longer a choice for that “choose one out of 3 course”. These changes begin Spring 2010.

there are a lot of changes that haven’t been reflected in the info they give out. I expect them to have more info in the coming days.

Now the MCB 130A thing is starting to make sense.

Certain pre-health tracks (like pharm, nursing, and opto) require a physiology class; and sometimes these schools require physiology lab. Currently there are only two physiology labs offered and those are IB 123AL and 132L. The former is always a very small class and the latter is highly impacted. IB has strongly been pushing for MCB to start their own physiology lab.

It appears in the past CDB majors (but oddly not GG&D majors) could use IB 161 and 164 for an elective. (Archive.Org link [MCB Undergraduate Program - MCB Major Requirements](MCB Undergraduate Program - MCB Major Requirements))

Anyways now that these two classes are both back, I figure MCB will allow at least CDB majors to use them again
