I visited in April and I was really impressed with the school but I have one concern. I did not see any students!! I visited on a Friday and from what I hear, not many students have classes on Friday so does that mean a lot of the students leave for the weekend? I would be coming from out of state and although I definitely would like to ski/hiking/explore CO, I would definitely not want to leave campus everyone weekend just so I wouldn't be the only one on campus if I stayed. Any thoughts? Also, does anyone know of some majors that would most likely have classes on Friday. I am interested in Environmental Science.

outdoors12, on Fridays there are no classes. A lot of students are working at internships or jobs on Fridays, some classes go on long-weekend field trips, etc. And yes, some students do leave campus on weekends to take advantage of all the outdoor opportunities in Colorado…hiking, camping, rafting, skiing etc. Sometimes they go for just a day, sometimes for a whole weekend, not to expensive when students share all the expenses.

My son just graduated from DU–we are from Ohio. No problems with weekends…always very busy.

If you are interested in Environmental Science all of the outdoor opportunities would be great for you!

It just struck me…could you have been there the week after midterms? There is a short break and a lot of students do leave campus then. Because the last quarter begins in March, there is a short break in April…a lot of kids leave campus then to arrange summer jobs, visit friends on other campuses, or even get in a final ski trip

Maybe. I’m glad to hear that many students go off and do outdoor activities because I love the outdoors. I am also curious about the notion about the school being a big party school. As I am not into the whole party and alcohol scene what is it like for students who do not want to drink?

Denver is a big city…there is plenty of stuff to do other than drink. Take a look at the newspapers (including the alternative papers) and see what is going on…then just invite some friends to join you. Sometimes it just takes one person to be a little bit pro-active and to suggest something fun to do to get the ball rolling.

As to DU being a party school…sure it is, just like every other school in the nation. But it is not all party, all the time, also just like every other school. And not all students party, and even those that do, do not party all the time. The quarter system is fast paced and can be unforgiving if students party too hearty…the first quarter is sometimes a brutal wake up for first years, but then they don’t repeat that mistake ever again.
