Confused about writing 140

Ok , so I am a little confused about writing 140.

Im looking through the schedule of classes under writing 140, and one of the options is Soci 143gm.

S0, essentially if I decide to sign up for this class I will be getting the GE credit, the diversity credit, and the writing concurrent class?

Can someone explain this to me please???

When you take Writing 140, you also must also take your Social Issues GE Category VI class.

There are, of course, exceptions to this depending on your major- i.e. some Architecture, Engineering, and Music majors can take Writ 130, a non-affiliated course.

I don't see Soci 143gm on the list but Soci 142gm DOES count for the Category VI AND the diversity requirement.

To answer your question directly (changing your question to Soci 142gm), if you take Writ 140, Soci 142gm, you will get credit for Cat VI GE, Diversity, and the Writing requirement.

There are a few other classes that count for both GE and diversity- you can cross reference the two lists to find those-

Schedule of Classes: Fall 2008: General Education Requirements: Diversity Courses

What is Soci 142gm? Is it for non-Engineering majors? What does it study?

Soci 142gm- It fulfills GE Cat VI requirement and Diversity requirement. Most all students need to fulfill these as part of the GE program. If you are not sure if you have to fulfill these requirements because of your major, check with your advisor.

Here's the description of that class-
USC General Education Course Description

S2 just took this class last semester. It is as the description states. It can be good or bad depending on your opinion on how this is presented.

so, how many GE classes do freshmen usually take?

Can you take GE classes Pass/Not pass?

You can take one, if I'm not mistaken.

x3cin- ^that is correct.

"No more than four units of credit (or one course) counting toward the general education categories may be taken on a pass/no pass basis. The writing courses cannot be taken on a pass/no pass basis."

What are some examples of good GE courses that fulfill multiple requirements?

"Race and Class in Los Angeles," "Los Angeles and the American Dream," "Social Problems," "Changing Family Forms," and "Social Issues in Gender" all satisfy the Diversity requirement and the Category 4: Social Issues GE requirement

Depending on your major, a required course might also meet the diversity requirement. E.g. for critical studies, it is CTCS 192. Nester - it's possible that's required for production students too, in which case it wouldn't matter whether your S can find a GE VI and the diversity requirement.

Anyone take or hear anything about “Los Angeles and the American Dream”?

i think im taking a class like that: AMST-101gm Race and Class in Los Angeles

I’ve had plenty of friends take los angeles and the american dream. they all really loved it.

That’s great to know gioosorio! It sounds really interesting, but that doesn’t always translate to a good class.
