Confused with Unit Limit CCC to UC

So I was accepted to UCR during the academic year 2015-2016 as a freshman and was placed on academic probation after qtr1 grades and then dropped at the end of qtr2. If i remember correctly, the only courses I passed while at UCR was gen chem 1 and 2, and I got C’s in both.

My first question is: since I retook gen chem 1 & 2 at my CC and got with A’s in both, will those new grades override those from UCR? If not, what happens to the units/grades from gen chem at my CC and/or UCR? I didn’t think this through at first because all I wanted was a fresh start, and I was way too demotivated to care. I didn’t realize at the time that you aren’t supposed to retake classes you earned a C or better in.

Secondly, you can only transfer a maximum of 70 units no matter how many units you actually complete at a CC right? I know the semester unit limit at UCLA is 86.5 and 90 for the rest of the UCs. So as long as I haven’t completed more than 20 semester units worth (and 16.5 units for UCLA) at UCR , I should be safe? Does being close to the limit affect your chances of acceptance?

I’m getting real paranoid about this. When do you need to start worrying about reaching the unit limit? If all you’ve taken are undergraduate courses, are the maximum awarded units always going to be no greater than 70? Or do units from undergraduate courses taken at other UCs add to the 70 units received from a CC and have the potential to bring you above the unit limit?

So I found out I completed 25 qtr units at UCR which equals 16.666 semester units. My unit total would be 86.666 by the time i finish my prereqs at CC which is .111 above UCLA’s limit. I also found out that I got a C in gen chem 1 and a D in gen chem 2 at UCR. Does this mean my A in gen chem 1 at my CC wont benefit my GPA since you are only supposed retake courses you received a C- or lower in? My A in gen chem 2 should replace my D from UCR though right? What would happen to the duplicate units from taking gen chem 1 & 2 twice? Will they subtracted from my UCR unit total or the unit total from my CC?

I am also currently signed up to take recommended courses along with prereqs, but If I only take the prereqs, I will have a total of 67 units, putting me slightly under UCLA’s unit limit. Does this mean i shouldn’t take any recommended courses. This is incredibly stupid. I should have never gone to UCR in the first place.

Your A in gen chem won’t count — you can’t repeat C grades, but I believe the repeated chem 2 needs to be taken at a UC (any UC). Courses taken at a UC I believe need to be repeated at a UC or UC extension.

Now having said this it may be that this rule only applies to Fs, but I think it applies to a D too. You need to contact a UCR for clarification.

Ok, here are the rules:

They won’t count the two chem courses at the CCC, so you lose those units.

So if you’re dismissed from a UC, it is impossible to start everything over from scratch at a CC and then transfer back to a UC? I just wish there was a way for the system to forget about my time at UCR. Oh well. Thanks for the info

This. See http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2017.pdf page 30

You may not have replaced the D you got in Chem since says

Another issue may be from your time at UCR since they require

People here are happy to try and help, but IMHO your situation is too complicated to get your counseling from the internet. You should find a good xfer counselor at your CC and also talk with the UC reps that visit your campus.

Best of luck to you, it sounds like you have turned things around, just work your way thru the bureaucracy to get your enrollment issues resolved

Thanks for the help. I think this means I’ve basically ruined my chances of ever being accepted to a decent school. My main intention for going to a CC was to restart everything from scratch and transfer to a better UC. I didn’t know you had to retake failed classes specifically at UC campuses, and being dismissed made doing so way harder. On top of that, if you take higher level courses within a series, you cannot retake lower leveled ones. This means that the C i earned in some stupid precalc course, and the F i got in calc 1 at UCR are stuck with me forever because I took Calc 2 at my CC, which took quite a bit of studying for me to get an A in. If i can’t get anything fixed once counseling opens back up, I’m probably going to stop attending my CC and quit college altogether.

Like I said before, you need to talk to a real expert such as a UC counselor before you reach any conclusions. A call to riverside might be a good place to start like the quote above I posted says. A lot of people go into those kind of jobs because they want to help kids achieve their college dreams. I expect they will be happy to hear about your current academic success and be willing to help you further your education.

It sounds like you want to go to a higher ranked school such as UCLA instead of Riverside. Maybe it is possible. Not all the rules and procedures are put online or known to people that read this forum. If you were willing to go back to Riverside the UC schools have procedures for readmission. And the Cal state schools have their own policies and procedures. If the UC system is not in the cards for you it may still be possible to go to a pretty good CSU.

You may be able to retake Calc 1 out of sequence. If so, you won’t get unit credit but you will get subject credit. But I think that might only apply if you aren’t repeating the course. Contact UCR and ask what they want you to do. I wish you the best of luck.
