??confused

yea so i got in today, but not honors— what is the basis for honors college?

my stats are 1460 out of 1600, 6 aps, 3.7 uw and tons of extras.

anybody else have this happen?

im confused, any feedback would be valued

a popular question today. so go look at the AU thread, "Email notification". in it i cited the AU's site on regular vs. honors admitted freshman stats.

thank you happy college mom

me again...you do look good, so maybe call your AU admissions officer (for your geographical area) and see what they say.when you say 6 APs, is that a good showing when compared with what your school offers?

yes it is a full schedule of advanced placement classes for senior year- so hardest curric available...

i am very confused about all of this and plan to call monday. maybe the packet (snail mail) will show something different. who knows? thank you and i will post what happens in case anyone else finds themselves under similar circumstances.

AU recalculates your GPA. What you say is a 3.7 probably includes non-academic classes, which AU doesn't include when they recalculate GPA. And they don't really care about strength of curriculum for honors. It's based on SAT and GPA.

Your GPA may not have been high enough. The cutoff's in past years have been abit above 3.8 ( I think usually closer if not 3.9) and it is always unweighted GPA.
I would call and ask. they will explain the process.

chilaxn~ strength of curriculum always matters...it's one of the most important aspects of one's application that's looked at by admissions officers. that's why all high school guidance depts. send their own school "report card ", showing what classes( college prep, honors, AP, IB,etc)they offer to give a basis for comparison with each applicant coming from that high school. this is true at all schools, but especially true with more competitive programs,ie, AU's honors. how were your leadership/community service components? AU is huge on those...let me know what happens.

^^everything I've ever heard about AU's admissions falls under the "very quantitative" category--I've always been under the impression that ECs, essays, etc. are not nearly as valuable to the AU adcom as numerical stats. Anyone know whether there's truth to this?

We were told at our tour that numbers were important. It was pretty cut and dry.

SATs and GPAs rule, true, but if all things are equal, AU will favor the leader/community activist/fluent linguist. we know a current student who was told by her admissions interviewer (after the fact, of course) that he took her because of her extensive community service. more and more applicants are strong, with the expected grades and scores, so admissions committees have to look beyond them. this "beyond" is where the personality of the school shows...and AU is SERVICE oriented.

You can always call them and ask. I'm sure they will clarify what it is they consider most important. I found them to be very forthcoming always. We are not experts just stating past experiences and info we can pass on.That is what was told to me by our admissions person both times my children applied.

thank you all for your feedback.

as for extras i am chock full haha

2 years varsity lacrosse captain, sec. of studnt council, vice president of national art honors society, student mentor, former trez of my class and writer for my newspaper + other clubs. also other community service such as meals on wheels.

i dont get it?!? i am really anxious to speak to them tommorow, but i am torn because to be honest american is not my first choice or even really in the running unless i get into honors or substantial scholorship. Am i being a jerk if i call and then dont even end up going?
