Confusing IRS letter

My mother received such letter from IRS. They have cashed her check but claimed they didn’t have her tax returns. I crafted a letter for her and asked her to send in another copy of returns right away.
But after further investigation, I am seeing that IRS is telling people not to send in another copy because it will further slow them down. They said due to 2020 backlog (Covid) they have not processed all returns yet and those letters were auto generated.

Wow, thank you for posting this!

I’m glad you called. I’d think it was someone trying to fraud me, etc. so I wouldn’t send it in. I’d call of course, like you did.

Perhaps this is for people who send in but don’t file electronically?

Given we are all seeing our data stolen (even from some Colleges - our “app info” was stolen from CU Boulder, so their letter said), but given we all seem to get thieved, one can’t trust anything today - especially via email but also snail mail.

Thanks for sharing.

I received a letter that said I had requested a review of my 2020 taxes. I had not done that. I took it to my my accountant. They did a review and said all was accurate. Still, scary.

Be careful. Last IRS letter we got referring to something that did not match our returns, turns out it was identity theft. Someone else had filed under our names and social security numbers. It was quite a hassle at the time and now we have to file under personal PIN numbers that are sent to us every year.
