Connect With Kelley and Red Carpet Day

Anyone going to Connect with Kelley this weekend? Anyone going to the Red Carpet Day on Monday, March 4?

Attending both!

I also went to the optional reception tonight, which was interesting. Not much to do besides interact with current Kelley/KLLC kids and some faculty.

Excited for tomorrow!

Really impressed with the Connect with Kelley event - the reception and the Saturday program. Definitely feel like my daughter is making the right choice, especially since the interim dean specifically mentioned one of the other schools in my daughter’s top 3 as not having nearly the same caliber of career services. The interim dean’s speech at the reception made everything seem too good to believe, so afterward we asked many students if they ever had professors who were just “so-so”. They admitted they had a few for gen ed classes, but every student said that all of their Kelley profs were great. The tour of the Kelley LLC was a bit unorganized, and we had to wait out in the cold for what felt like forever for the bus, but it’s a minor complaint. The KLLC also seems so great, it will be a big disappointment if DD doesn’t get in. Now Sunday will be spent doing homework and exploring on our own, before heading to the first half of Monday’s Red Carpet Day. Hoping for warmer weather on Monday!

What was the school she mentioned as one of your daughter’s choices?

My family was really impressed with the presentation. We did not stay for the whole reception, but we did get to talk with students and faculty. They are really successful branding the Kelley family as a tight-knit organization at such a large school. I was curious to know where the dean’s students go/went, she describes that they are both interested in business and not at Kelley.

The cold was horrible! We made the second bus out of the auditorium, but it was chaotic. First time seeing the KLLC and it was definitely not a palace, but every student who lives/ed loves the program. Definitely crossing my fingers as well.

This is actually my first time in Bloomington seeing the university. I had already committed and only applied to Kelley so it’s very interesting being here. I’m pretty confident in my choice. The proof is in the numbers, Kelley has great job placement and I know they are well represented in the Midwest/East. Lots of Indiana kids though, but that’s expected (I’m out of state).

What breakout session was your daughter in?

At Friday night’s reception, the Dean mentioned that her son had attended Washington University in Saint Louis to study entrepreneurship. She told this story: a professor in that field, when reading the roll of students in his class, noticed that the Dean’s son was from Bloomington. He then asked him what on earth he was doing at WUSTL since IU’s own program in entrepreneurship was better.

The Dean said that her daughter had attended American University, initially majoring in journalism, but ultimately graduating with a business degree. There, a journalism professor asked her daughter why she hadn’t gone to IU because of its strength in that field.

The Dean’s theme was that she wanted her kids, who’d been raised in Bloomington, to experience a different environment, yet she believes that they could have had an excellent or even superior education had they attended IU.

Separately, on Saturday she compared IU/Kelley’s culture favorably to the culture at UNC Chapel Hill, where the Dean had taught for twelve years.

Yup DabblingDad, that’s the Dean’s conversation exactly. Made DD feel really good about her decision to commit to IU before even hearing about her RD decision from WUSTL. Slim chance we could have afforded WUSTL anyway, so even better!

Coste, haha - we were on the 2nd bus to the KLLC too. Maybe we all rubbed shoulders as we crammed onto that bus. McNutt seems like a typical dorm - cinderblock walls and narrow dreary hallways. Not the worst we’ve seen but far from the best. But I think the benefits of the KLLC will definitely outweigh the dreariness.
DD was in the Networking breakout session - room 120.

Stbem, thats interesting! where are you from? I was in Social Engagement in 121. Disappointed with the session because it was so generic, but to somebody who is less knowledge about activities on campus, it is beneficial.

Yes, the benefits of the KLLC are great. Met up with a friend’s sister today who is currently a freshman there and she loves it. Said they work hard and play hard, but she’s a homebody type and said she’s found her place too.

Dabbling Dad, now that is interesting. I was very serious about attending George Washington in DC until I was persuaded to check out IU this past summer. I wanted a city, but eventually got so interested in IU that a big city didn’t matter as much.

I live in St. Louis. WUSTL is definitely not a business school, while it may be ranked high, most of the attention is given to their Med field (hospital is amazing). After seeing all of Bloomington today, IU is not much different from the suburban parts of St. Louis either. We do have the downtown part of the city, but that is almost abandoned and unsafe - not for college kids!

Glad I heard this information, definitely cements my decision!
