Hello. I was wondering how the connections/networking are at Tulane. How is it to get jobs and internships and those types of things? Also, where are their strongest connections/networks? Thanks!
Very strong in South Florida, New York-New Jersey, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and of course on the Gulf Coast and especially Louisiana. Also strong in Atlanta, Philly, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, and San Francisco. DC is just so so. Outside of those cities, there are a fair number of alums, but you must be proactive in hooking up with the various local clubs. Engineering, architecture, business, and anything Latin American have strong networks. Outside of those fields, most Tulane grads go to professional or graduate school shortly after graduating, and their subsequent school becomes more determinant of their employment.
I would add to the (very correct) assessment above that Tulane has made a significant investment and effort over the last few years under the new VP of Alumni Relations to upgrade the various methods for Tulanians to connect world-wide. The Tulane name travels quite well.
just to second what fallenchemist said, and maybe slightly off topic from OP, but i’ve noticed and appreciated a lot more programming directed towards alumni relations the past several years. my local alumni chapter (located far, far away from new orleans) has increased the amount and types of events. i recently went to an event a week ago to celebrate mardi gras and was pleasantly surprised at the large turnout. many of the others i met there said they had been considering attending more alumni events for awhile and the better organization and programming gave them the push they needed to attend. many alums, including myself, look forward to networking, and some of my local friends were surprised i had an active alumni group so far from nola. anyways we always have an easy time connecting when we reminisce about ms. mae’s, f&ms, the boot, Igor’s, and food.
and another aside, i was hired for my first job out of undergrad at a law firm (again, far away from new orleans) after they were impressed i attended tulane, although no one at the firm had attended.
Last fall Tulane did a nationwide simultaneous alumni event http://alumni.tulane.edu/s/1586/Alumni/index.aspx?sid=1586&pgid=3224&gid=3&cid=5714&ecid=5714&post_id=0 I thought that was a great idea.
